Excerpt from John Knox Of John Knox, have been both helpful and sug gestive. Quotations have been generally in dicated, but this acknowledgment must cover any accidental omission to give to each author his due; and for the rest the reader may be assured that while no material fact has been omitted, nothing has been recorded for which ample authority could not be given. The figure has been felt to be too large for the canvas to which we have been restricted, but we have sought to reproduce, as faithfully as possible the man as he was, and if we may succeed in re moving any of the unreasonable prejudice, with which many still regard the Scottish Reformer. Excerpt from Genealogical Memoirs of John Knox and of the Family of Knox All who love liberty and value Protestantism venerate the character of John Knox; no British Reformer is more entitled to the designation of illustrious. By three centuries he anticipated that parochial system of education which has lately become the law of England; by nearly half that period he set forth those principles of civil and religious liberty which culminated in a system of constitutional government. To him Englishmen are indebted for the Protestant character of then "Book of Common Prayer;" Scotsmen for a Reformation so thorough as permanently to resist the encroachments of an ever aggressive sacerdotalism. Knox belonged to a House ancient and respectable; but those bearing his name derive their chiefest lustre from being connected with a race of which he was a member. The family annals presented in these pages reveal not a few of the members exhibiting vast intellectual capacity and moral worth. What follows is the result of wide research and a very extensive correspondence. So many have helped that a catalogue of them would be cumbrous. Excerpt from John Knox: The Reformer Biographies are dull. So is much of history, cyclopedia, and lexicon. The difference is in the method. This book Was started by two sentiments, - one spoken at the grave of Knox by Earl Morton; the other attributed to Knox, which I can not verify. Both will appear toward the end of this Volume. The task of Knox was the most difficult of the famous Reformers, and completest done. Icono clast, of necessity; but chiefly Reformer. Excerpt from John Knox: A Criticism and an Appreciation This little book had a modest origin. I promised to give a lecture on Knox, and the subject interested me. I read the best works available in connection with it, and more particularly the writings of Knox himself as given in the excellent edition of Dr. David Laing. I felt no temptation, however, to compose another life of the Great Reformer; but I soon found it impossible, in spite of all my efforts at compression, to confine myself to the limitations of a lecture. This accounts for the concentrated character of my narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from John Knox and the Reformation In this brief Life of Knox I have tried, as much as I may, to get behind Tradition, which has so deeply affected even modern histories of the Scottish Reformation, and even recent Biographies of the Reformer. The tradition is based, to a great extent, on Knox's own "History," which I am therefore obliged to criticise as carefully as I can. In his valuable John Knox, a Biography, Professor Hume Brown says that in the "History" "we have convincing proof alike of the writer's good faith, and of his perception of the conditions of historic truth." My reasons for dissenting from this favourable view will be found in the following pages. If I am right, if Knox, both as a politician and an historian, resembled Charles I. in "sailing as near the wind" as he could, the circumstance (as another of his biographers remarks) "only makes him more human and interesting." Opinion about Knox and the religious Revolution in which he took so great a part, has passed through several variations in the last century. In the Edinburgh Review of 1816 (No. liii. pp. 163-180), is an article with which the present biographer can agree. Several passages from Knox's works are cited, and the reader is expected to be "shocked at their principles." They are certainly shocking, but they are not, as a rule, set before the public by biographers of the Reformer. Mr. Carlyle introduced a style of thinking about Knox which may be called platonically Puritan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
