This is the first-ever large-format full-color book on the human history and natural history of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The text is by Jeff Rennicke, an accomplished outdoor writer who lives in Bayfield, WI, the "gateway to the Apostles." Photographs are by Layne Kennedy, whose assignments have included National Geographic, Smithsonian, and many other publications. The books covers the history of the islands, from native American habitation, voyageurs and French missionaries, to European Americans who made their livings off the islands' forests and fishing, as well as a brief boom in brownstone quarrying. 21 of the 22 islands are now part of the national park system, and in August 2005, dedication ceremonies were held for the Gaylord A. Nelson National Wilderness, in honor of the islands' champion and founder of Earth Day. Foreword is by William Bechtel, late Senator Nelson's chief of staff during the time the islands were visited by John F. Kennedy and subsequently became a national park. The text also covers the unique geography and ecosystems of the islands.

Introduction to microscopic plants, diatoms, that live all over the world from the seas of Antarctica to the soil in your backyard. These small, one-celled plants are in a group called algae. One of the most special parts of a diatom is its skin; it is not soft but made of glass! Diatoms use energy from the sun to create food through the photosynthesis process. The food looks like small drops of oil. Diatoms are very important to life here on earth because they are the beginning of the food chain; diatoms create the food, insects eat diatoms, fish eat insects, people eat fish! They could be a source of fuel and solar energy in the future.

*NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti* Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Book of Jewels, for personal development contains eleven of the biggest life lessons that I've learned, and those lessons are captured within each chapter. The chapters open with an original quote that frames it to help bring each life lesson into focus. I've shared my most important life lessons in this collection of personal stories and experiences with Envy, Love & Fear, Faith vs. Religion, Dating, Difficult Conversations and more. This work is intended to help you grow exponentially. The dominant theme that's threaded throughout this work and evidenced in each of the chapters is learning to trust your instincts."I started writing this book almost eight years ago, so it's been a long time coming-I know. It was an on and off process because I wasn't quite ready to write it. I had more living and learning to do. There were more life experiences that I needed to gain in order to write the things I wrote in this book. It feels ready now."-Craig Stewart

A richly illustrated and fascinating book of jewels and gems that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of jewelry, portraiture, and European culture. From the Renaissance to the end of the Belle Epoque, cameo, intaglio, and miniature portraits, prized as representations of eminent people or treasured as images of the beloved, have been enriched by jeweled frames in order to wear them or display them as precious objects. Rulers from the Medici to the Romanovs commissioned portrait jewels. Dynasties represented here include the Valois and Bourbon in France; Bavarian, Habsburg, and Hanoverian in Germany, Central Europe, and Spain; Tudor, Stuart, and Hanoverian in Britain; and the House of Orange-Nassau in the Netherlands. Men and women famous in politics, religion, history, literature, and the arts, including Queen Elizabeth I, Louis XIV, Catherine the Great, Voltaire and Madame du Châtelet, Popes Clement XII and Pius VII, and Lord Byron are featured in this exquisite miniature gallery. The author draws upon her knowledge of jewelry, painting, history, and literature to set the portrait jewels in the context of people’s lives, and shows how they were worn and what they meant to donors and recipients—tokens of allegiance to a ruler, of commitment between lovers, of affection within families.
