This doctoral thesis focuses on the search for new phenomena in top-antitop quark (tt) final states with additional b-quark jets at the LHC. It uses the full Run 1 dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV. The final state of interest consists of an isolated lepton, a neutrino and at least six jets with at least four b-tagged jets, a challenging experimental signature owing to the large background from tt+heavy-flavor production. This final state is characteristic of ttH production, with the Higgs boson decaying into bb, a process that allows direct probing of the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling. This signature is also present in many extensions of the Standard Model that have been proposed as solutions to the hierarchy problem, such as supersymmetry or composite Higgs models, which predict the pair production of bosonic or fermionic top quark partners, or the anomalous production of four-top-quark events. All these physics processes have been searched for using an ambitious search strategy that has been developed on the basis of a combination of state-of-art theoretical predictions and a sophisticated statistical analysis to constrain in-situ the large background uncertainties. As a result, the most restrictive bounds to date on the above physics processes have been obtained.

The use and optimisation of integration grid techniques to generate next-to-leading order predictions of jet cross-sections, independent of parton distribution functions, was investigated. Such methods were found to provide an accurate approximation to a standard Monte-Carlo simulation (within 1%) and enable collider data to be readily included in global PDF fitting procedures. However, the benefit of including inclusive-jet cross-section data from ATLAS in global fits is only significant if the jet energy scale (JES) can be constrained to ~1% at high pT. Uncertainties in the theoretical prediction of the inclusive-jet cross-section such as PDFs and fixed-order (scale) uncertainties were studied and compared with experimental errors arising from jet energy resolution and absolute scale. These uncertainties were then considered in the context of a quark compositeness search where a sensitivity to a compositeness scale of Lambda10TeV can be achieved with 10 inverse femtobarns of data, if the jet energy scale can be constrained to ~1%. An analysis using dijet angular distributions found a similar sensitivity without the dependence on the jet energy scale. A potential method of evaluating the stability of the jet energy scale out to high pT by Hbootstrapping the calibration at low pT by the use of multi-jet events was also investigated. This suggests that a calorimeter non-linearity can be detected for jets with pT500GeV at ~1.5%/500GeV (i.e. a 1.5% change in JES over 500GeV in pT). An investigation of inner-detector commissioning issues associated with the ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker (SCT), including a review of Hnoisy modules on the SCT Barrel (from May 2007) was carried out. In addition a tool for DCS monitoring within the online monitoring framework was developed and tested during the M5 and M6 commissioning weeks. Finally, a method of assessing the track reconstruction efficiency by track-insertion was considered for the particular case of minimum bias events.

Tests of the current understanding of physics at the highest energies achievable in man-made experiments are performed at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. In the theory of the strong force within the Standard Model of particle physics - Quantum ChromoDynamics or QCD - confined quarks and gluons from the proton-proton scattering manifest themselves as groups of collimated particles. These particles are clustered into physically measurable objects called hadronic jets. As jets are widely produced at hadron colliders, they are the key physics objects for an early "rediscovery of QCD". This thesis presents the first jet measurement from the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC and confronts the experimental challenges of precision measurements. Inclusive jet cross section data are then used to improve the knowledge of the momentum distribution of quarks and gluons within the proton and of the magnitude of the strong force.

The Large Hadron Collider produces particle collisions at the highest energies ever observed in a scientific experiment. This apparatus is built to test the predictions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, including the existence and properties of the Higgs boson. As a proton-proton collider, quarks and gluons are produced in abundance, which quickly fragment and hadronize into collimated showers of energy called jets. These jets are detected and measured in the ATLAS detector, which is built around the point of the proton-proton collisions to observe the products of these interactions. Three major original research efforts are presented using data from proton-proton collisions observed in ATLAS. The first analyzes events with jets and photons to search for a beyond-the-Standard-Model decay of the Higgs boson. The second utilizes novel techniques in weak supervision to perform a generic data-driven resonance search in events with two jets. The third formalizes the calibration of the jet energies observed in the ATLAS detector, and further proposes a new method to improve this calibration with machine learning. The work presented here addresses some of the key questions in particle physics today. By searching for new physics, it is possible to shed light on the nature of the Higgs boson and the possibility of physics beyond the Standard Model. These searches focus on processes involving multiple jets in the final state, which motivates innovations in the reconstruction of jet energies. In addition to setting new bounds on theoretically interesting models, the innovations in object reconstruction and analysis techniques developed in this work can be applied in other ATLAS efforts using currently available data or data gathered in the future.

This thesis provides a detailed and comprehensive description of the search for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the mono-jet final state, using the first 3.2 fb-1 of data collected at the centre of mass energy of colliding protons of 13~TeV recorded in the ATLAS experiment at LHC. The results are interpreted as limits in different theoretical contexts such as compressed supersymmetric models, theories that foresee extra-spatial dimensions and in the dark matter scenario. In the latter the limits are then compared with those obtained by other ATLAS analyses and by experiments based on completely different experimental techniques, highlighting the role of the mono-jet results in the context of dark matter searches.Lastly, a set of possible analysis improvements are proposed to reduce the main uncertainties that affect the signal region and to increase the discovery potential by further exploiting the information on the final state.

This thesis describes in detail the search for new phenomena in mono-jet final states with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state is considered the golden channel in the searches for large extra dimensions (LED) but also allows access to a very rich SUSY-related phenomenology pertaining to the production of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS), SUSY Dark Matter candidates, GMSB SUSY models with very light gravitino masses, as well as stop an sbottom pair production in compressed scenarios (with nearly degenerated squarks and the lightest neutralino), and also invisible Higgs searches, among others. Here, a number of these scenarios are explored. The measurements presented yield new powerful constraints on the existence of extra spatial dimensions, the pair production of WIMPs, and also provide the best limit to date on the gravitino mass.

This thesis describes in detail a search for weakly interacting massive particles as possible dark matter candidates, making use of so-called mono-jet events. It includes a detailed description of the run-1 system, important operational challenges, and the upgrade for run-2. The nature of dark matter, which accounts for roughly 25% of the energy-matter content of the universe, is one of the biggest open questions in fundamental science. The analysis is based on the full set of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at √s = 8 TeV. Special attention is given to the experimental challenges and analysis techniques, as well as the overall scientific context beyond particle physics. The results complement those of non-collider experiments and yield some of the strongest exclusion bounds on parameters of dark matter models by the end of the Large Hadron Collider run-1. Details of the upgrade of the ATLAS Central Trigger for run-2 are also included.
