Excerpt from The Private Life of Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur De Bienville: I. A Colonial Letter; II. Reminiscences; III. The Mississippi Bubble; IV. In the Paris of Louis XV; V. A French Will; Vi; Montmartre An attempt has here been made to picture some of the scenes in the private life of the founder of Mobile, New Orleans. Natchez, and the explorer of the Mississippi Valley. His public career is almost the history of the country, and is found in Miss Grace Kings Life of Bienville; but the movement to erect a statue of him has brought the wish to picture the man himself. The facts now given are authentic. His letter and will are given Jodoin and Vincents Longueuil. I have transcripts of his dispatches, and much in the way of maps and otherwise is in my Colonial Mobile. If imagination has aided in the coloring, it is hoped that it is the historic imagination which restores rather than creates. Raphael Semmes was a living legend when he settled in Mobile after the Civil War. He commanded the C.S.S. Alabama-a ship as famous as its commander and the most feared commerce raider of the war. With Semmes at her helm, the Alabama almost single handedly brought United States commercial shipping to an end.

All New Orleans' glories, tragedies, contributions, and complexities can be traced back to the geographical dilemma Bienville confronted in 1718 when selecting the primary location of New Orleans. "Bienville's Dilemma" presents sixty-eight articles on the historical geography of New Orleans, covering the formation and foundation of the city, its urbanization and population, its "humanization" into a place of distinction, the manipulation of its environment, its devastation by Hurricane Katrina, and its ongoing recovery.
