JAZZ IN THE KEY OF LIGHT is not your typical fine art photography book. In addition to visually capturing a variety of the world's jazz greats in performance or moments of personal reflection, author Ken Franckling paired the images with essential quotes from interviews he conducted with those same musicians in assignments for a variety of mainstream and music publications. The spotlighted musicians, some captured in historically important images, range from legends Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis and Sarah Vaughan to a variety of today's rising stars, including Nicki Parrott, Gregory Porter and Miguel Zenón.

This book explores the intimate connection between body and instrument in popular music, explaining chords, melodies, riffs, and grooves in terms of embodied movement, which in turn informs the imagination in constructing meaning in songs. Tracing connections from foundational blues, gospel, and rock musicians to current rap artists, author Timothy Koozin demonstrates how a focus on body-instrument interaction can illuminate creative strategies while leveling implied hierarchies of cultural value, revealing how artists represent subjectivities of gender, race, and social class in shaping songs and whole albums.

In the pursuit of improvisation (jazz or other styles), scales are the "palettes" utilized for creating melodies. Often, scales are only practiced ascending or descending step-wise. "Jazz Scale Workout" by Ken Karsh contains eight measure through-composed continuous eighth note exercises (or "workouts") utilizing "jazz style" melodies based around the Major, Dorian (minor seventh), Mixolydian (Dominant), and Super-Locrian (Altered Dominant) scales—the most common scales in the jazz idiom. Four basic guitar fingerings for each scale are provided for the foundation of these exercises. Since these scales are the basis for improvising over the frequently utilized ii-V-I progression, the final "workouts" found in this publication cover this area. There are two "workouts" provided for each scale form—one with only the scale tones (labeled "Diatonic") and the other with "outside" chromatic tones resolving to the diatonic scale tones (labeled "Chromatic"). the "workouts" can and should be tried with different fingerings and should be played in all keys for maximum benefit. "Jazz Scale Workout" provides an enjoyable "finger and mental fitness program" for guitarists interested in expanding their scale awareness in the jazz idiom.

A beautifully composed journey through music history! Music history is a required course for all music students. Unfortunately, the typical music history book is dry and academic, focusing on rote memorization of important composers and works. This leads many to think that the topic is boring, but bestselling author Michael Miller proves that isn’t so. This guide makes music history interesting and fun, for both music students and older music lovers. • Covers more than Western “classical” music—also includes non-Western music and uniquely American forms such as jazz • More than just names and dates—puts musical developments in context with key historical events
