The text of the novel is based on the first edition of 1847. For the Fourth Edition, the editor collated the 1847 text with the two modern texts (Norton’s William J. Sale collation and the Clarendon), and found a great number of variants, including accidentals. This discovery led to changes in the body of the Norton Critical Edition text that are explained in the preface. New to "Backgrounds and Contexts" are additional letters, a compositional chronology, related prose, and reviews of the 1847 text. "Criticism" collects five important assessments of Wuthering Heights, three of them new to the Fourth Edition, including Lin Haire-Sargeant’s essay on film adaptations of the novel.

The authoritative text reprinted in this volume is the third edition, published in 1848 (the last edition corrected by Charlotte Bronte). The notes to the text pay particular attention to literary and Biblical allusions and to words and phrases not readily available in desk dictionaries. They also include translation of French passages. The backgrounds section of this Norton Critical Edition offers generous samplings of Charlotte Bronte's early writings, letters, and poems. It also included pertinent passages from Mrs. Gaskell's biography as well as a sampling from the children magazine The Children's Friend, demonstrating a particular kind of oppression Jane Eyre suffered.

The text of Pride and Prejudice is the 1813 first edition text. "Backgrounds and Sources" includes biographical portraits of Austen by members of her family and by acclaimed biographers Claire Tomalin and David Nokes. Seventeen of Austen’s letters--eight of them new to the Third Edition--allow readers to glimpse the close-knit society that was Austen’s world, both in life and in her writing. Samples of Austen’s early writing allow readers to trace her growth as a writer as well as to read her fiction comparatively. Also included are pieces by Richard Whately, Margaret Oliphant, Richard Simpson, D. W. Nixon, David Spring, Edward Ahearn, and Donald Gray. A Chronology-new to the Third Edition-and a Selected Bibliography are also included.
