Excerpt from Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto Abridgment in essay form of a much larger work at onetime contemplated and partially completed. This fact may account for what will be felt by the real student Of Tintoretto to be a somewhat uneven treat ment of the subject. The author takes this opportunity of expressing his thanks to all those who have so kindly assisted him, especially friends in Venice. TO Miss Holbom of Aberdeen Park his gratitude is particularly due, as without her aid the book would never have been written, and to her he would dedicate this small effort. Excerpt from Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti, Called Tintoretto The thirty-first of May was the three hundredth anniversary of Tintoretto's death, and as yet no adequate account of him has appeared in English, or, so far as I can discover, in any language. Much that is excellent has been written about him by Taine, Ruskin, and other critics, but no clear analysis of his genius, no thorough and systematic examination of his works, has yet been placed before the public. Mr. Osler's little book is good so far as it goes, but the evolution of Tintoretto as a painter is not in it. At the same time it contains many valuable suggestions, and no other writer has appreciated so well the moral equality of this master's painting. The Italian Life of Tintoretto by Ridolfi does not appear to have been translated into English. The friends who have assisted me in the present undertaking can testify to the thorough manner in which it has been performed. Every clew that might lead to fresh information has been followed out carefully, and all publications in French, German, and Italian which could throw light on the subject have been consulted. Considered one of the three greatest painters of sixteenth-century Venice, along with Titian and Veronese, Tintoretto was a bold innovator. His free, expressive brushwork made his work look unfinished to contemporaries but is now recognized as a key step in the development of oil-on-canvas painting. Even today's audiences are astonished by the superhuman scale, painterly dynamism, and visionary qualities of his work. On the 500th anniversary of Tintoretto's birth, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of his career and achievement, with fifteen essays and reproductions of more than 140 paintings--many newly conserved--as well as a selection of his finest drawings. One special contribution is a focus on the artist's portraiture.--Provided by publisher.
