It is October 1854 - Jack Wolfe and his friend Bull are both soldiers caught up in the middle of the war raging in the Crimea. A bloody affair that surely couldnÕt get any worse, that is until soldiers start turning up murdered in horrific ways. When superior officers wonÕt admit thereÕs a murderer, Jack makes it his personal mission to catch the killer on his own. He is just starting to close in when the war ends and the trail goes cold. Civilian life leaves Jack with time on his hands. Undeterred, he continues his pursuit driven by the nagging thought that the killer is still out there somewhere. In this historical tale, from the Crimean war to a sleepy mill town in Lancashire with suspicious goings on, to the start of the American Civil war, Jack Wolfe follows adventure across Europe and into America on a determined quest for justice.

Download Encyclopedia of American Short Films, 1926-1959 Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.

"The entire field of film historians awaits the AFI volumes with eagerness."--Eileen Bowser, Museum of Modern Art Film Department Comments on previous volumes: "The source of last resort for finding socially valuable . . . films that received such scant attention that they seem 'lost' until discovered in the AFI Catalog."--Thomas Cripps "Endlessly absorbing as an excursion into cultural history and national memory."--Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.

Download Blood and War at My Doorstep Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
"Between these pages the reader will learn that North Carolina citizens did not idly stand by as their soldiers marched off to war. The women worked themselves into patriotic exhaustion through Aid Societies. Civilians with different means of support from the lower class to the plantation mistress wrote the governor complaining of hoarding, speculation, the tithe, bushwhackers, unionism, conscription, and exemptions. Never before had so many died due to guerilla warfare. Unknown before starving women with weapons stormed the merchant or warehouses in search for food. Others turned to smuggling, spying, or natures oldest profession. Information from period newspapers, as well as mostly unpublished letters, tell their stories."
