In this talk the author shows the results of a fit of the NRQCD matrix elements to the CDF data for direct J/[psi] production, by including the radiative corrections to the g g[r-arrow][sup 3] S[sub 1][sup[1]] channel and the effect of the k[sub T]-smearing. Furthermore he performs the NLO NRQCD analysis of J/[psi] production in fixed-target proton-nucleon collisions and he fits the colour-octet matrix elements to the available experimental data. The results are compared to the Tevatron ones.

This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

The XIX Physics in Collision conference reviewed experimental results in electroweak, quantum chromodynamics, neutrino, bottom and rare kaon physics, and updated recent developments in the area of gamma ray bursts as well as the issue of the cosmological constant and dark matter. The conference opened with reports on electroweak physics. A decade of precision experiments in laboratories around the world failed to uncover any significant deviations from standard model predictions. Precise W boson and top quark mass measurements suggest a low mass Higgs boson in the standard model, possibly within the reach of the LEP II and the upgraded Tevatron colliders. These presentations were followed by a summary of the latest results on searches for Higgs and supersymmetry. There were three reports on neutrino physics: atmospheric, solar and reactor/accelerator based neutrino experiments and results. Impressive Super-K results strongly suggest νμ→νς oscillation, a scenario confirmed by less precise Soudan2 and MACRO data. The latest results on strange and heavy quark physics were summarized. High statistics from CLEO, LEP I and Tevatron have enabled experimenters to study many rare charm and bottom quark decays for the first time. Among many other interesting results presented, the first measurements of sin 2β by CDF and ε′/ε by KTeV provide a preview of expected developments in the near future.

The level of 'anomalous' charmonium suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions and its interpretation as a signal of quark-gluon plasma formation requires a robust understanding of charmonium production and absorption in proton-nucleus collisions. In a previous study we have shown that, contrary to common belief, the so-called J/[psi] 'absorption cross section', [sigma]{sub abs}{sup J/[psi]}, is not a 'universal constant' but, rather, an effective parameter that depends very significantly on the charmonium rapidity and on the collision energy. Here we present ugraded Glauber calculations with the EPS09 parameterization of nuclear modifications of the parton densities. We confirm that the effective 'absorption cross section' depends on the J/{psi} kinematics and the collision energy. We also make further steps towards understanding the physics of the mechanisms behind the observed 'cold nuclear matter' effects.

The differential cross-section d[sigma]/dx[sub F] for J/[psi] production in 800 GeV proton-nucleus collisions has been measured in the kinematic range 0.30 [le] x[sub F] [le] 0.95 and x[sub F] [lt] p[perpendicular] [lt] 5 GeV through the decay mode J/[psi] [yields] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. The nuclear dependence of J/[psi] production over this range was measured using copper and beryllium targets. The differential cross sections are in good agreement with the predictions of the symbolical parton duality model. The data show no evidence for an intrinsic charm component in the proton. The ratio of the differential cross sections for copper and beryllium shows a suppression of J/[psi] production in copper which increases with increasing x[sub F].
