"This book fills a gap in our knowledge about the activities of Western supporters and members of Islamic State by examining the experience of their Australian cohort. More than 200 Australian men, women and children travelled to Syria and Iraq to fight with Islamist groups and to help establish an Islamic state by force. Dozens more assisted Islamic State by supporting those overseas, or by planning or carrying out terrorist attacks in Australia. For all that, little is publicly known about the impact of the Syrian conflict on Australia's radical Islamists. This book provides a well-researched examination of how and why so many Australians travelled to fight for, or otherwise supported Islamic State. From the failed attempt to bring down an Etihad passenger plane en route from Sydney to Abu Dhabi, to showing their children holding the heads of Syrian soldiers, Australians were prominent in carrying out Islamic State's directions. Using a range of Australian and foreign court records, social and mainstream media content, this book provides the first detailed look at who these people were, what tasks they carried out, how they came to adopt this radical view of Islam, and what long-term legal and security implications are likely to result from their actions. This book will be of interest to students of terrorism, political Islam, Australian politics and security studies"--

So-called Islamic State began to appear in what it calls Khorasan (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, Iran and India) in 2014. Reports of its presence were at first dismissed as propaganda, but during 2015 it became clear that IS had a serious presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan at least. This book, by one of the leading experts on Islamist insurgency in the region, explores the nature of IS in Khorasan, its aim and strategies, and its evolution in an environment already populated by many jihadist organisations. Based on first-hand research and numerous interviews with members of IS in Khorasan, as well as with other participants and observers, the book addresses highly contentious issues such as funding, IS's relationship with the region's authorities, and its interactions with other insurgent groups. Giustozzi argues that the central leadership of IS invested significant financial resources in establishing its own branch in Khorasan, and as such it is more than a local movement which adopted the IS brand for its own aims. Though the central leadership has been struggling in implementing its project, it is now turning towards a more realistic approach. This is the first book on a new frontier in Islamic State's international jihad.

Under Siege: Black Muslim Down Under is a memoir that chronicles the life of professional journalist Sulaiman Abdur-Rahman as it gives the gripping account on why he walked away from his high-profile journalism career in the United States to migrate to Sydney, Australia. Wrapped in a riveting love story, Abdur-Rahman's memoir also serves as a must-read social commentary about race and religion. Drawing upon his life experience and writing from his perspective as an African-American Muslim, Abdur-Rahman uses his bulldog journalism style, backed with compelling evidence, to explain why the Commonwealth of Australia is a culturally challenged nation that offers a lower quality of life and lesser opportunities for advancement than the United States of America. The narrative inevitably touches upon the religion of Islam and the global fight against the Islamic State international terrorist group. In the end, this memoir conveys an unprecedented story about faith, love, adversity, and romance.

This report provides information known by the end of 2011 about the Islamic State’s origins, finances, organization, methods of establishing territorial control, and response to airpower. Countering the Islamic State can rely, in part, on the great deal of accumulated knowledge available. Iraqis and coalition forces routed the group once, and this history can inform the components of another successful strategy to defeat the Islamic State.

The author was one of those people in Melbourne who knew about 9/11 before it happened. The terrorist squad of the police force harassed her in the late 1990’s when the government began writing up its intended terrorist laws. The poor woman was nearly shot dead as a female terrorist just after the Bali bombing. A United Nations meeting convened on the other side of the brick wall where she parked her truck. “Matriarch and World War III; Internal State Terrorism in Australia” was therefore compulsory. Just who masterminded 9/11 doesn’t really matter anymore. The 21st Century invasions of Islamic countries and the suicide bombings and carnage in the world demand an explanation. In the 1970’s the United Nations told the world to reduce population growth. Islam and the Catholic Church refused. The problem is that Islamic countries can only export their overpopulation in an attempt to reduce the humanitarian crises that arise from too many people demanding the necessities of life. Jihad for women in Islam means excess children and refugee status. When invaded, the mujahedeen volunteer to fight to the death; the others flee as refugees to consolidate their numbers elsewhere—the traditional strategy of military Islam. Representative democracy has a weakness—the numbers win the vote. The long-term, cold war military strategies of Islam therefore go beyond parliamentary consideration. The hullabaloo about the humanitarian crisis in the world and the demands of Islamic refugees overshadow the targeting of the unwanted in Australia. The naive and the uninformed don’t know. Secrecy Provisions prevail. World War III is a collection of civil wars all around the world.

If you're a fan of political thrillers, you'll love this riveting, action-packed hunt for a terrorist mastermind. Professor David Scott becomes embroiled in the aftermath of an attack on Sydney Opera House, which is bombed from the sky and then attacked by armed terrorists, with scores of civilian casualties. Islamic Terrorism splits the nation! Who are the terrorists behind the attack, and how could local Australians commit such a horrific crime against their fellow-countrymen? With society slowly descending into chaos, non-Muslims and Muslims increasingly retaliate against each other. The Prime Minister and his Cabinet struggle to keep control of the situation, helped by two men suddenly thrust into positions of enormous responsibility. David Scott is a university professor, an expert in Political Islam, whose mother had been killed in the Opera House atrocity, enlisted by the PM to find out how local Muslims could be susceptible to be recruited for such a crime. Jason Blake is a senior member of the Australian Federal Police, placed in charge of the pursuit of the terrorists behind the massacre. While Jason is hunting the Mastermind behind the terrorist attacks, he is drawn in to helping David in the bigger issue of finding reasons for the existence of such home-grown terrorists. And David is plunged into the centre of the action, eventually coming face to face with the terrorist mastermind himself... The book fearlessly addresses how people in Western societies lack understanding of the Muslim communities that have come to their country as immigrants, and conversely, how those Muslim communities don't realize why, and the extent to which, many people in the host communities are wary of them. It describes how the Muslim communities, goaded by David, go through a process of self-examination to see if changes to the way in which they practice their religion are necessary, and even desirable. This is the backdrop to the story of three individuals and the impact the terrorist act and its after-effects has on them. The relationship between David and his fiancée Dina, a Muslim, slowly unravels as the pressure of the rupture in society and the anti-Muslim feelings associated intrudes into their lives, and David is forced to come to terms with his deep-seated but unacknowledged concerns about the subject to which he has devoted much of his professional life. Meanwhile Jason, under enormous pressure to stop the terrorists who continue to commit sporadic acts of horrifying violence, is engaged in a deadly Cat and Mouse game with the terrorist Mastermind.

"The Way of the Strangers is an intimate journey into the minds of the Islamic State's true believers. From the streets of Cairo to the mosques of London, Wood interviews supporters, recruiters, and sympathizers of the group...Wood speaks with non-Islamic State Muslim scholars and jihadists, and explores the group's idiosyncratic, coherent approach to Islam...Through character study and analysis, Wood provides a clear-eyed look at a movement that has inspired so many people to abandon or uproot their families.
