Excerpt from Irish Orators and Oratory Mond and their contemporaries. The research specialist who now writes history for us is disposed to undervalue oratory. He is passionate for documents, Custom House records, tables of statistics, the Statute Book, newspapers, pamphlets, broadsheets. He is all for what he calls facts, but facts do not explain themselves. Without contem porary testimony to their significance they remain blind or rather dead, and of the witnesses to Whom appeal may be made the orator is by no means the least informative. He represents the warm thought of his time, as the news paper represents generally the tepid criticism, and the Act of Parliament the cold performance. This is true even in economic history which, most of all, is set down as a matter of averages, percentages, and other bloodless actualities. Grattan on the Commercial Propositions and the Corn Laws, o'connell on Free Trade and the Poor Law, Butt, Davitt and Mr. Dillon on the land system, Mr. Devlin on the Irish problem of poverty bring one closer to the focus Of reality than much bemused grubbing in Blue Books. As for the economic substratum of the Act of Union, by far the amplest and' most accurate account of it is to be found in the Parliamentary debates, especially in the speeches'of Sir John Foster on the One side and Lord Castlereagh on the other. Excerpt from Oratory and Orators The French philosopher, d'alembert, goes so far as to say of eloquence, that the prodigies which it often works, in the hands of a single man, upon an entire nation, are perhaps the most shining testimony of the superiority of one man over another and Emerson expresses a simi lar opinion when he says that eloquence is the appro priate organ of the highest personal energy. As there is no effort of the human mind which demands a rarer combination of faculties than does oratory in its loftiest ights, so there is no human effort which is rewarded with more immediate or more dazzling triumphs. The philosopher in his closet, the statesman in his cabinet, the general in the tented field, may produce more lasting effects upon human affairs, but their in uence is both more slowly felt, and less intoxicating from the ascend ancy it confers. The orator is not compelled to wait through long and weary years to reap the reward of his labors. His triumphs are instantaneous; they follow his efforts as the thunder-peal follows the lightning's ash. While he is in the very act of forming his sentences, his triumph is re ected from the countenances of his hearers.
