Excerpt from The Annals of Iowa, Vol. 11: 1872-1873 HE Pottawattamies, who for a short time lived in Iowa, were once a powerful nation. Their early history is very obscure, but previous to their coming to Iowa, they resided in Indiana, the southern part of Michigan, and the _eastern part of Illinois. The United States has probably had more business transactions with these Indians than with any other nation. They were received into the -friendship and protection of the government by a treaty held with them on the 9th of January, 1789; and since that time, and previous to their removal to Iowa, the government held thirty-five treaties with the Indians of this nation. Excerpt from The Making of Iowa My object in writing this book, "The Making of Iowa," is not to give a history of the State, but only a narration calculated to keep alive the memory of those pioneers whose achievements and wisdom laid the foundation for our institutions. There is great danger that the stirring events of later years will obscure if not obliterate the record which these hardy men made under our Territorial government and in the formative years of our Statehood. An account of "The Making of Iowa," in the early stages of her growth and development will interest the children and induce them to read history, both for the pleasure it will give them and the information it will impart. The record has been followed in regular order through the earliest days to the times preceding the Civil War. The history of that eventful period is still fresh in the public mind. Here I have dealt with the past and with the deeds of men who served the State well in their day and have long since passed to their reward. Besides, the history of Iowa is rich in Indian names. Black Hawk, Keokuk, Mahaska and Wapello still live in the names of Iowa counties and towns. The land for which these brave chiefs contended is ours to-day, but they had many noble traits and their memory is part of the inheritance of the State. Excerpt from The Iowa Journal of History and Politics, Vol. 6 It had been hoped that the past services of George W. J ones would entitle him to a unanimous election. But a few Whigs were willing to administer a measure of partisan politics to the infant Territory. In the campaign lasting hardly a month the past records and capabilities of J ones and Meeker were paraded for comparison. Personal and local considerations, however, such as the location of county seats, internal improvements, and a discussion of the vari ous claims of Burlington, Belmont, Du Buque, and Madison for the capital of the Territory constitute the principal record of the first political activity in Iowa. The popularity of Col. G. W. J ones was general through out the Territory. It was he whose efforts had secured the passage of the Act of April 20, 1836, establishing the original Territory of Wisconsin, and the voters generally believed that his election was necessary to secure the best interests of the young Territory in matters of National legislation.
