It is shown that NiTi shape memory alloys are sensitive to thermal cycling above As and irradiation with neutrons and protons under certain conditions. The effects are highly depending on the material composition and the thermal treatment. Cycling and irradiation are decreasing and thermal aging is increasing the phase transformation temperatures. The design of the NO valve is closely oriented on the NC design with the only exception of a new designed notched pipe to be able to implement a sealing solution. The sealing solutions are selected as a combination of a soft and hard sealing partner. This is either realized by using synthetic materials or a soft metal coating. The only suitable solution for coating titanium is found to be an intermediate layer out of platinum and a final layer of gold. This is creating the problem of the combination of dissimilar metals which can be resulting in a galvanic corrosion effect. The characterization of the actuators is showing that the behavior is an a range which was expected from earlier tests. There is one new effect at the stress free elongation during the first cycle. The actuators are showing a negative two way effect which has to be investigated further. The results of the first screening of the sealing solutions showed surprising results. The synthetic poppets showed the best results with the only drawback of the lack in compatibility. The titanium solution achieved great results and might be a promising candidate after it is improved. With the gold coated poppet it was not possible to achieve sufficient leakage rates. It is therefore necessary to improve the coated surface to reach better sealing capabilities.*****It is shown that NiTi shape memory alloys are sensitive to thermal cycling above As and irradiation with neutrons and protons under certain conditions. Shape-memory polymers (SMP) are a unique branch of the smart materials family which are capable of changing shape on-demand upon exposure to external stimulus. The discovery of SMP made a significant breakthrough in the developments of novel smart materials for a variety of engineering applications, superseded the traditional materials, and also influenced the current methods of product designing. This book provides the latest advanced information of on-going research domains of SMP. This will certainly enlighten the reader to the achievements and tremendous potentials of SMP. The basic fundamentals of SMP, including shape-memory mechanisms and mechanics are described. This will aid reader to become more familiar with SMP and the basic concepts, thus guiding them in undergoing independent research in the SMP field. The book also provides the reader with associated challenges and existing application problems of SMP. This could assist the reader to focus more on these issues and further exploit their knowledge to look for innovative solutions. Future outlooks of SMP research are discussed as well. This book should prove to be extremely useful for academics, R&D managers, researcher scientists, engineers, and all others related to the SMP research.

Shape Memory Alloy Engineering introduces materials, mechanical, and aerospace engineers to shape memory alloys (SMAs), providing a unique perspective that combines fundamental theory with new approaches to design and modeling of actual SMAs as compact and inexpensive actuators for use in aerospace and other applications. With this book readers will gain an understanding of the intrinsic properties of SMAs and their characteristic state diagrams, allowing them to design innovative compact actuation systems for applications from aerospace and aeronautics to ships, cars, and trucks. The book realistically discusses both the potential of these fascinating materials as well as their limitations in everyday life, and how to overcome some of those limitations in order to achieve proper design of useful SMA mechanisms. Discusses material characterization processes and results for a number of newer SMAs Incorporates numerical (FE) simulation and integration procedures into commercial codes (Msc/Nastran, Abaqus, and others) Provides detailed examples on design procedures and optimization of SMA-based actuation systems for real cases, from specs to verification lab tests on physical demonstrators One of the few SMA books to include design and set-up of demonstrator characterization tests and correlation with numerical models

The objective of this book is to assist scientists and engineers select the ideal material or manufacturing process for particular applications; these could cover a wide range of fields, from light-weight structures to electronic hardware. The book will help in problem solving as it also presents more than 100 case studies and failure investigations from the space sector that can, by analogy, be applied to other industries. Difficult-to-find material data is included for reference. The sciences of metallic (primarily) and organic materials presented throughout the book demonstrate how they can be applied as an integral part of spacecraft product assurance schemes, which involve quality, material and processes evaluations, and the selection of mechanical and component parts. In this successor edition, which has been revised and updated, engineering problems associated with critical spacecraft hardware and the space environment are highlighted by over 500 illustrations including micrographs and fractographs. Space hardware captured by astronauts and returned to Earth from long durations in space are examined. Information detailed in the Handbook is applicable to general terrestrial applications including consumer electronics as well as high reliability systems associated with aeronautics, medical equipment and ground transportation. This Handbook is also directed to those involved in maximizing the relia bility of new materials and processes for space technology and space engineering. It will be invaluable to engineers concerned with the construction of advanced structures or mechanical and electronic sub-systems.
