DEVELOPED UNDER THE SHADOWS of the Egyptian temples, Hellenistic astrology is an ancient form of divination inherited from Mesopotamian wisdom traditions. Distilled in Græco-Roman antiquity, and refined in the fires of philosophy and astronomy, it forms the bedrock of traditional western astrology (while also bearing profound similarities to Jyotish or Vedic astrology). Drawing on a body of Greek texts that have remained largely untranslated for almost two-thousand years, Demetra George brings the contemporary practice of astrology back to its ancient roots. Scholar, translator, and practitioner, her work reveals the potent cosmological veins that bear the lifeblood of traditional astrology. Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice is, in essence, a training manual for the study and practice of Hellenistic astrology. In two volumes, it provides the complete foundations and detailed dynamics of ancient chart-reading techniques. Each volume and each technique is richly illustrated with diagrams, example charts, and practical exercises. Volume 1: Assessing Planetary Condition In ancient cosmology, the planetary divinities symbolised the hierarchy of forces that shape our lives in the sublunary world. Not all planets are created equal in a given nativity, however, and so the first step of the practicing astrologer is to assess the condition of each planet in a chart in order to determine its effectiveness (or lack thereof) in the native's life. To this end, this volume provides a series of rigorous methods for evaluating the condition of each planet in a birth chart through the lenses of classification (sect, gender, benefic/malefic), signs and rulerships (residences, reception, exaltation, trigons, bounds), the solar phase cycle (speed, direction, visibility, phase, phasis), lunar considerations (course, phases, bonding, nodes, bending, eclipses, prenatal lunation), and aspects (configurations, witnessing, testimony, bonification, maltreatment, adherence, overcoming, rays). Finally, it brings all of these factors together in a powerful synthesis that unlocks the layers of a chart with unrivaled precision.

Dorotheus of Sidon, who appears to have lived in Alexandria, flourished in the first century AD. He wrote his Pentateuch (five books) on astrology in Greek, in verse. This translation, from 1976 by David Pingree, is from a fourth century Pahlavi (Persian) source. The first book is on the judgement of nativities. Book two concerns marriage and children. Book three is on the length of life. Book four is on the transfer of years, i.e., forecasting. Book five is on interrogations, i.e., electional astrology. In this book are the earliest known astrological charts. Dorotheus bases much of his interpretative methods on the triplicity rulers, by day and by night. All fire signs have the same rulers. All earth signs have their rulers, as do air and water signs. He uses Egyptian terms. He, like the Greeks of his day, also uses the Dodecatemoria, which are the twelfths of a sign. And many, many lots, all defined. For the first time in this edition: Pingree's Preface newly translated. An appendix with charts in modern format. A complete table of terms and triplicity rulers. A table to calculate Dodecatemoria. Newly reset to match Pingree's original 1976 edition. Written a century before Ptolemy, here is the mainstream of Greek astrology. It will handsomely repay study.

Abū Ma'shar's famous Great Introduction to traditional astrology was a major influence on medieval astrologers through its Latin versions, and is available and explained to modern audiences in this new translation from the Arabic original. Written in the early 800s during the Golden Age of the 'Abbāsid Caliphate in Baghdad, the Great Introduction falls into two parts. Books I-IV present a theory of astrology and its primary concepts in the language of Aristotelian philosophy, including a lengthy defense of astrology. Books V-VIII contain numerous lists and descriptions of sign categories, planetary conditions, and planetary configurations. Book VII describes how to judge elemental combinations in planetary conjunctions, and Book VIII contains Abū Ma'shar's classic list of Lots and how to interpret them. The Great Introduction is a landmark in astrological history, and is a must-have for practitioners and historians.

Astrology of the World I: The Ptolemaic Inheritance is the first in a series of three works of translations in traditional mundane astrology, from Latin and Arabic astrologers. Part 1 enumerates many methods of traditional weather prediction, including Lots and lunar mansions. Part 2 focuses on prices and commodities, predicting market fluctuations and supply and demand. Part 3 discusses the interpretation of eclipses and comets. Part 4 is an extensive look at chorography (assigning signs and planets to regions of the earth), including a complete discussion of climes and a guide to obscure place-names. Throughout, Dr. Benjamin Dykes provides commentary and extensive introductions to the astrology of Ptolemy, which is the basis of most of these techniques. It is a must-have for traditional astrologers and historians of astrology.
