Excerpt from The History of Medicine, Vol. 1: Comprising a Narrative of Its Progress From the Earliest Ages to the Present Time, and of the Delusions Incidental to Its Advance From Empiricism to the Dignity of a Science The purpose of the following pages is to consider the past history, the present state, and the future prospects of the Medical Profession. To record the names and preserve the memory of those whose great achievements have conferred benefit and lustre on their fellow-men, has in all ages been re garded as a duty, and felt as a gratification to wise and reflecting men but whilst endeavouring to relate the principal events which have contributed to make the medical profession what it now is a high and noble calling - it will also be necessary to speak of the prevailing delusions which have been, and still are, practised by the unprincipled, to tempt the unwise and unwary, making largeness of promise a profitable trade, and sinking the profession in name, though not in deed, to a base and degrading craft. Excerpt from The History of Medicine, Philosophical and Critical, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Origin to the Twentieth Century Philosophy, says the distinguished Sprengel, is the mother Of medicine, and the perfection Of the one is inseparable from that Of the other. In connection with the history Of the sciences, we undertake to inquire what was known Of them in each Siecle; to ascertain the knowledge, the pre vailing Opinions, and the genius Of the medical art. Physicians have, as a rule, taken their theories from the philosophers. If partisan demonstrations were waged in the schools here, they were faithfully followed in the schools there, seeking by a Show Of great words and learned phrases to give to their statements an evidence Of truth that they did not have, and that they could never acquire. When the philosophers began to introduce a critical Spirit into human knowledge, physicians were also the first not to admit any principle which was not the result Of accurate Observation.' Nothing could be more natural. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Study of Medicine, Vol. 1 of 2 In fulfilling his duty, the Editor has attempted to divest himself of local feelings; to consider the physicians of the United States as belonging to one family; to be just to all; and to present the results of their experi ence with fairness. How far he has succeeded, may be seen by referring to the notes marked with the letter D., for which he alone is accountable. The desire, however, of printing the new edition in such a form as to place it within the reach of every one, and the constant inquiries for the book, which, to speak technically, has been out of print for many months, obliged the publishers to limit the Editor both as to space and time. This fact will account for the brevity with which many important topics have been treated, and also for some omissions.
