"Like many 18-year-olds who sign up to serve with the U.S. Navy, Petersen was looking for adventure when he enlisted. The difference between him and the average kid of 1950, when he enlisted, was that Petersen was African American. At the time military opportunities were limited for blacks, so it was remarkable that Petersen, revealed here as an intense go-getter, was admitted to the highly competitive naval aviation cadet program. He would go on to become the first African American pilot, then flag officer, then three-star general in the deeply conservative Marine Corps. Assisted by veteran biographer Phelps, Petersen relates his personal and career trajectory from wide-eyed kid to seasoned combatant. Although the presentation at times is overly detailed, with recollections of Petersen's acquaintances sprinkled liberally throughout. This work offers valuable insight into the evolution of both the military and the society at large through the experience of one man and his family. It's hard not to wince when Petersen describes being stopped for impersonating a military officer at a time when blacks in the service were presumed to be enlisted men. Other anecdotes are more benign, such as the time a puzzled young Korean woman tried to wipe the color from his face. To Petersen's credit, he includes much commentary from his first wife, Ellie, who is candid about the toll of being married to an ambitious pioneer. Through her, readers see the mettle of that rare breed of social groundbreakers." — Publishers Weekly

A venerable tiger, old and toothless now, looks back over his life from cubhood and early days roaming wild in the Indian jungle. Trapped into a miserable circus career as 'Raja the magnificent', he is then sold into films (co-starring with a beefy Tarzan in a leopard skin) until, finding the human world too brutish and bewildering, he makes a dramatic bid for freedom. R.K. Narayan's story combines Hindu mysticism with ripe Malgudi comedy, viewing human absurdities through the eyes of a wild animal and revealing how, quite unexpectedly, Raja finds sweet companionship and peace.

Two old scallywags break a silly law to “prove” the extinct Tasmanian Tiger lives on. "Great characters. Great fun. Hilarious blend of characters and lies." This is the first in a seven-book series based on the island of Tasmania at the bottom of Australia. The two octogenarians don't just want to alter the course of ecological history. They want to ensure the former mayor gets what he deserves. They want revenge! That stuck-up old bugger has invested their life savings in volatile gold-mining shares without their knowledge. Even worse, he’s also secretly invited a 92-year-old Irish priest to join their last-man-standing lottery – and Father O’Boring has a track record of not dying. Quirky characters lurk around corners in this funny novel. The whimsical adventures continue with Blokes on a Plane, Whitey and the Six Dwarfs, Blokes in Donegal, Blokes in the House, Who Knew Tasmanian Tigers Eat Apples!, and Who Knew Tiger Sharks Also Eat Apples? Three more books are on the drawing board. Order your copy of Lie of the Tiger now and start laughing along to the Windy Mountain series. You need to know more about the opening book? OK. I can't give it all away, but: Caught in the middle of all this black comedy is a new arrival who has some townsfolk fearful because he looks a lot like the man-mountain who once tied the same unpleasant mayor to a tree for a night of terror. The familiar stranger reluctantly takes charge of the Windy Mountain Tasmanian Tiger Museum, owned by a dodgy syndicate with other plans for the site. When the devious manager sets him up to fail, the two old blokes rescue him with their plan to revive the believed extinct Tasmanian Tiger. The former mayor ridicules anyone who thinks the Tasmanian Tiger still roams the bush – and especially not in the main street of Windy Mountain.
