Malgré d’indéniables progrès en matière d’accès à l’école, cet ouvrage s’attache à mettre en évidence les bouleversements récents que connaissent les systèmes éducatifs dans les pays du Sud, en insistant sur les conséquences d’une globalisation trop souvent définie par le Nord. Dans tous les pays étudiés, l’accroissement de la scolarisation s’accompagne de l’aggravation des inégalités liées aux appartenances sociales ou ethniques. Les apprentissages réalisés par les élèves les plus défavorisés ne leur permettent pas toujours de devenir alphabètes ou de contribuer substantiellement à l’amélioration des conditions d’existence de leurs communautés. Les enseignants et les familles ne sont pas associés aux processus de transformation. Au final, cet ouvrage rend compte tout à la fois de la puissance de la globalisation dans les politiques éducatives mises en œuvre dans les pays du Sud et de la disjonction entre les intentions démocratiques du Nord et les effets inégalitaires d’une marche forcée vers un modèle scolaire unique.

This open access book describes how elite studies theoretically and methodologically construct their object, i.e. how particular conceptualizations of elites are turned into research practice using different methods for collecting, dealing with and analyzing empirical data. The first of four sections focuses on what Mills named the power elite and includes Bourdieu’s field of power. From the 23rd to 26th of November 2009 in La Palma island, in the Canaries, the Comparative Education Society in Europe (CESE) organized an international symposium entitled PISA under Examination: Changing Knowledge, Changing Tests, and Changing Schools. During four days seventeen leading scholars of Europe and America presented their contributions to debate the different problematiques of the remarkable phenomenon represented by the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment or PISA. PISA is not merely an educational event. It is also a media circus which involves the public rehearsal for reasons for failure or success; and even, in some cases, public and political and academic explanations about why 'failure' was not really that, and why 'success' was not really that either. This book provides an overview on the major findings of a questionnaire survey of academic profession in international perspective. More than 25,000 professors and junior staff at universities and other institutions of higher education at almost 20 countries from all over the world provide information on their working situation, their views and activities. The study “The Changing Academic Profession” is the second major study of its kind, and changes of views and activities are presented through a comparison of the findings with those of the earlier study undertaken in the early 1990s. Major themes are the academics’ perception of their societal and institutional environments, the views on the major tasks of teaching, research and services, their professional preferences and actual activities, their career, their perceived influence and their overall job satisfaction. Emphasis is placed on the influence of recent changes in higher education: the internationalisation and globalisation, the increasing expectation to provide evidence of the relevance of academic work, and finally the growing power of management at higher education institutions. Overall, the academics surveyed show that worldwide discourses and trends in higher education put their mark on the academic profession, but differences by country continue to be noteworthy. Academics consider themselves to be more strongly exposed to mechanism of regulations, incentives and sanctions as well as various assessments than in the past; yet their own freedom, and responsibilities and influence shape their identity more strongly and are reflected in widespread professional satisfaction.
