Technological innovation – combined with scientific research – has always constituted a driving force of transformation in our societies. At the same time, it is no longer simply possible to transfer technologies from the North to the South; it is also essential to consider technical innovations that are adapted to the social, environmental, cultural and economic conditions of receiving countries, and which can be appropriated by their potential users and as such prove to be real technologies for fostering development. The first International Scientific Conference on the topic organized by the UNESCO Chair Technologies for Development at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2010 focused on its four priority sectors: Technologies for Sustainable Development of Habitat and Cities, ICTs for the Environment, Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Technologies for the Production of Sustainable Energy. This volume reflects the main outcomes of the conference and provides some significant orientation and success criteria for the effective implementation and use of innovative technologies, their aims, their particular applications in the context of developing countries, their accessibility for users, and their appropriation by producers and stakeholders in the field of development both in the North and South, thus ensuring their sustainability. This kind of scientific cooperation also highlights the added values for northern researchers in sharing their knowledge and know-how, leading to a real win-win partnership. The authors gathered within this book include representatives from academic and research institutions and other organizations from diverse countries and offer a significant synergy of competences, approaches and disciplines.

Information communications technologies (ICTs) are generally viewed as the new vehicle to redress developmental problems. The book assesses the value of such claims by analyzing the structure and workings of the global political economy (GPE) and its impact on, and prospects for developing countries in the current techno-economic context. The book uses a case study of the Caribbean to illustrate the challenges and opportunities faced by small-island developing states (SIDS) in the new techno-economic paradigm. The question must be asked, can small island developing states such as those of the Caribbean leverage modern ICTs for growth and development against the backdrop of a yawning global digital divide? Hence, the book addresses the central problem of the digital divide and whether emerging ICTs offer any real economic opportunities for the Caribbean region.

"The World Sustainable Development Outlook series has been developed to provide an overview of sustainable development, to discuss why it is important and to provoke forward thinking on the development of a more coherent approach to solving global problems related to sustainability through science and technology. In doing so, a holistic approach is used to critically examine the interrelationship between the natural, governmental, economic and social dimensions of our world and how science and technology can contribute to solutions. This is a truly global source book, which is reflected in the varied national and cultural origins of the contributors, as well as the topics and case studies covered. Each year a different theme will be covered.Outlook 2011 includes a selection of the best papers presented during the 9th International Conference of World Association for Sustainable Development (WASD) under the theme ‵‵Sharing Knowledge Making a Difference: The Role of International Scientific Cooperation.” Papers in this book critically propose new ways to return to the basic principles of international scientific co-operation between developed and developing countries (DCs), supporting partnerships and sharing knowledge. It is hoped that this book will help to stimulate debate amongst scholars, researchers and policy-makers.The six main parts of the book are: Science, Technology and Innovation, ICTs and Knowledge Management, Education, Learning and Public Policy, International Business, Entrepreneurship and Development, Sustainability Management and the Environment,Public Health."--Provided by publisher.

In the international effort to advance human health, welfare, and development while better managing and conserving the environment and natural resources, there is a clear and growing recognition of the role of scientific and technical knowledge in global governance. This has created an urgent need for the United Nations to equip itself with the capability to bring scientific knowledge to inform international decision making. Given the complexity and diversity of United Nations programs, organs, and mandates, this report focuses on the main functions of the United Nations that affect international governance in the fields related to sustainable development, with reference to the taxonomy of the key United Nations organs in which these functions are undertaken. Efforts have been made to ensure that the major categories of United Nations organs have been covered and therefore the results of the review are representative of the functioning of the United Nations system.
