This book analyses the rise and decline of the Basque terrorist group Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA, Basque Homeland and Freedom). ETA declared a unilateral ceasefire in November 2011, bringing to a close a campaign of political violence that started in the late 1960s. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, the overwhelming majority of secession supporters agreed that an independent Basque homeland would be realised through ‘ballots’ and not ‘bullets’. Providing an inter-disciplinary overview of radical Basque nationalism that pays special attention to the drivers for ETA’s decline, defeat and disbandment, this book includes chapters by historians, political scientists and sociologists who offer three important theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on nationhood and security studies. Firstly the book re-assesses the military conflict that opposed ETA and the Spanish state, by paying special attention to tactical and strategic considerations as well as the counter-terrorist policy itself. Secondly it provides an original interpretation of the politics of fear which surrounded the process of victimization, as well as assessing the extent to which the issue of violence led to the polarisation of citizens. Thirdly the authors examine the historical narratives and rituals that contributed to the production and reproduction of identity binaries and memories of war. "This volume offers a feminist critique of counter- and deradicalization programmes, including those collected under the umbrella of 'preventing and countering violent extremis'. Based on insights from five countries, and examples from elsewhere, the book shows how collectively efforts rely on particular narratives of agency, security and human rights. Putting gender at the centre of analysis reveals a series of significant limitations in anti-radicalisation work, in construction, operation, and evaluation. First, these programmes fail to explore or engage with how masculinity and femininity inform the radicalisation process. As a result, they cannot successfully understand the personal drivers or the socio-political environment of these programmes. Second, within the operations of these programmes it becomes clear that male radicalisation is unreflectively linked to an excessive but flawed masculinity, whilst ideas about women's radicalisation depend on orientalist stereotypes about passivity and subjugation. Solutions for male deradicalisation therefore hinge on particular ideals of masculinity that few men can obtain, and deradicalising women is seen as a rescue mission. Third, the impact of these programmes derives from a racialized paternalist logic that justifies intervention in 'ordinary lives' in the name of security, yet fails to deliver. There is a gendered differential in the impact of counter-radicalisation measures. Although the rhetoric of countering terrorism is often couched in a narrative of 'women's rights' and 'liberal values', the book demonstrates the consequences are often detrimental to these precepts. The book concludes by offering an alternative way of thinking about and implementing anti-radicalisation efforts, rooted in a feminist peace"--

This volume investigates the application of psychological theory to the case of terrorism and political violence. At Easter of 1916 an armed insurrection, launched by paramilitary republicans, took place in Ireland. When the General Post Office in Dublin was seized on Easter Monday, the rebels declared a free Irish Republic, independent from Great Britain. In the century that has passed since the Easter Rising, each generation of Irish republicans has mounted their own paramilitary campaign to bring about an independent united Ireland, from the War of Independence, to The Troubles, and right up to the modern-day dissident republican violence. By bringing together a range of researchers, from across a variety of academic disciplines, this edited volume analyses the one hundred years of Irish republican violence from 1916 to 2016. The assembled authors assess the evolution of paramilitary violence through a variety of themes, including the IRA from 1919-21, the case of ‘the Disappeared’, the relationship between counterterrorism killings and Provisional IRA bombings, and the analysis of modern-day violent dissident republican statements. Bringing the volume to a close are two long-form interviews with two key actors within the Troubles, Danny Morrison and Billy Hutchinson.
