The experimental data on the multiplicity distributions for various kinds of secondaries produced in the proton-nucleus interactions in emulsion at 200 GeV/c and the correlations between them are presented and discussed. All the characteristics of heavy prongs (mean values n{sub b}, n{sub g}, N{sub h}, their distributions and correlations) are independent (or have a very weak dependence) on the collisions energy in the range 20-200 GeV/c. The data contradict to the cascade-evaporation model and qualitatively agree with the mechanism of particle emission via the long-lived intermediate states. The observed weak A-dependence (≈ A{sup 0.15}) of shower particle distributions is in agreement with the calculated ones according to the simplified two-step model. It is shown that the n{sub s}-distributions agree well with KNO scaling law in the 67-200 GeV/c range, but the form of universal [psi](n{sub s/n{sub s}})-function has a weak A-dependence.

The experimental data on multiplicities of charged secondaries produced in pion-nucleus interactions in an emulsion at 200 Gev/c and correlations bet6ween them are presented and discussed. Parameters of multiplicity distributions are compared with the relevant ones at lower energies and with data from pA-interactions at 200 Gev/c. The multiplicity of heavily ionizing particles in [Pi]−A-interactions weakly depend on the incident energy. The KNO scaling is observed being the same for incident protons and pions.

An investigation of 281 interactions of 2 GeV/c negative pions with emulsion nuclei is reported. The fraction of stars with charged secondary pions is 75=3 per cent, and the mean number per star of emitted charged pions is 1.21 =0.08. Only 2 K-mesons have been observed, which confirms other results that the production cross section of strange particles is low. Our results have been compared with the predictions from a cascade calculation by Metropolis et al. which starts from the known elementary pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon cross sections. The agreement between the calculated data and our experimental results is good as far as the multiplicity, energy spectrum and angular distribution of emitted pions and also the energy spectrum of knockon protons are concerned. Extensive air showers are a very unique phenomenon. In the more than six decades since their discovery by Auger and collaborators we have learned a lot about these extremely energetic events and gained deep insight into high-energy phenomena, particle physics and astrophysics. In this Tutorial, Reference Manual and Data Book Peter K. F. Grieder provides the reader with a comprehensive view of the phenomenology and facts of the various types of interactions and cascades, theoretical background, experimental methods, data evaluation and interpretation and air shower simulation. He discusses astrophysical aspects of the primary radiation and addresses remaining puzzling questions that cannot yet be answered. They remain as a challenge for present and future research in the field. The book is split into two volumes. Volume I deals mainly with the basic theoretical framework of the processes that determine an air shower and ends with a summary of ways and means to extract information from air shower observations on the primary radiation. It also presents a compilation of data of our current knowledge of the high energy portion of the primary spectrum and composition. Volume II contains mainly compilations of data of experimental and theoretical nature as well as predictions from simulations of individual air shower constituents. Also included are chapters dedicated exclusively to special processes and detection methods. Extensive up-to-date reference lists appear at the end of each chapter. Researchers and students working in the field of cosmic ray detection and astroparticle physics will appreciate finding this book in their library.

A sample of 133 interactions in nuclear emulsions initiated by 26.7 Gev/c protons was examined. It was found possible to separate the events fairly well into two groups, one in which almost all of the shower particles were emitted in a single nucleon-nucleon collision in a target nucleus, the other (cerca 20%) in which the shower particles were produced in two or more successive collisions in a target nucleus. Analysis of the effective target mass distribution of the events and the (log cot theta) distribution, where theta is the laboratory emission angle of a shower particle, supported the above interpretation and indicated that an appreciable fraction of the events in the first group might be attributed to peripheral nucleon-nucleon collisions.
