Central collisions between nuclei at relativistic energies form a hot and dense hadronic system over a large volume. Phenomenological models, as well as QCD calculations on the lattice, predict a phase transition in nuclear matter leading to deconfinement, a state of matter in which quarks and gluons are free to move inside the entire volume of the deconfined region. This new state was given the name of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Based on the conjecture that collisions of heavy nuclei at high energies can create the necessary condition of a high energy density thermalized system, a series of experiments were built to search for possible signals of QGP creation. The NA35 collaboration uses a wide acceptance apparatus at the CERN SPS which detects the majority of charged hadrons (h{sup {+-}}), and neutral strange particles produced in reactions of p, 16O and 32S projectiles at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon lab momentum on different targets. It consists of two major tracking devices which provide the momentum measurement of the charged particles: a 2 m long streamer chamber (SC) which is placed inside a 1.5 T vertex magnet, viewed by three cameras, and a 2.5x1.5x1.0 m3 Time Projection Chamber (TPC). A set of calorimeters was used as the basic trigger device of the experiment, to select central (small impact parameter) collisions. In the data presented here, a calorimeter placed in the beam path selects near head-on collisions, i.e. events where only a small amount of energy (mostly spectator nucleon energy) was detected in an angular acceptance of less than 0.3 degrees around the beam axis. The data sample consists of three systems: S+S, S+Ag and S+Au at 200 GeV/c with trigger cross section of 3, 3.2 and 6% of the total inelastic cross section, respectively.

At sufficiently high temperatures and densities quarks and gluons exist in a deconfined state called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). QGP existed in the Universe shortly after the Big Bang, and today is created in accelerator based experiments which collide heavy nuclei at high energies. Results from these experiments point to a hot, dense and strongly interacting state of deconfined quarks and gluons. The study of heavy flavor probes (those originating from $c$ and $b$ quarks) is an active area of research in heavy ion collisions. Heavy quarks are produced in the initial hard scatterings of collisions and thus are sensitive to the entire evolution of the medium. They also potentially have different sensitivity to medium induced energy loss compared to light flavors. This dissertation investigates the interactions of heavy flavor quarks with the medium by studying correlations between electrons from heavy flavor decays and hadrons. At high transverse momentum, the direction of the electron is highly correlated with the direction of the parent heavy flavor meson. We look for evidence of energy loss in the QGP as well as jet induced effects on the medium. We present electron-hadron correlations from Au+Au collisions in a wide range of centrality bins as well as correlations from p+p. The datasets used are the best currently available due to high statistics and low material in the detector. We also investigate the dependence on the orientation of the trigger particle to the event plane to look for path length dependent effects on the correlation as well as non-flow contributions to electron electron $v_2$.

Nuclear and particle physicists are searching for evidence of a new state of elementary matter with the constituents of nucleons and quarks, roaming freely in a deconfined state known as the quark-gluon plasma. To create the required conditions for this new phase to occur in the laboratory, relativistic heavy ion experimental facilities have been developed where heavy nuclei can collide at highly relativistic energies. Such collisions have the potential to provide, albeit for a very short time duration, the high energy density and temperature within an extended elementary volume, allowing the formation of this new phase. This text, co-authored by many experts, provides an elementary introduction and also surveys current experimental accomplishments. Many students participated in the write up of the lectures which are thus at an accessible level. An introduction to the research program in Latin America is offered in the spirit of the Pan-American Advanced Study Institute.
