Not that many years ago academics spoke about there being individuals who were teachers and other individuals who were researchers. The suggestion was that teachers were not necessarily competent researchers and equally it was not necessarily clear that good researchers would make good teachers. There may have been some truth in this and maybe there still is. However, the main thrust of universities have been that research is the sine qua non for an academic career. This being the case all academics, whether they are designated as teachers or researchers, need to know something about research methodology and research methods. It is for this reason that the European Conference on Business Research Methods has had a substantial following the last 16 years. But as well as having academics present research papers on the topic of research methodology for business and management studies we have been interested to elicit and record examples of good practice in the teaching of this important topic. For this reason we established the Excellence Awards in this field three years ago. This publication contains the entries from the shortlisted contestants and gives the reader a good overview of the type of issues which academics are coping with in classrooms today in various parts of the world.
