Bringing together 34 flash fiction stories from 14 authors, SPARK offers a host of stories to thrill, move, and challenge fans of short-short fiction. A woman physically at war with her mother's legacy inside her own body, a young girl given a vision of a utopic past at the end of the world, a man psychically bonded to the living weapon for which he is the failsafe, a harem of "female" androids newly capable of questioning their subservient status-these are a few of the characters you'll meet on a flash fiction tour stretching from the mundane to the transcendent, from suburban homes and public parks to a desolate world light-years from Earth. The stories in SPARK transcend the boundaries of genre and strain at the limits of their diminutive word count. The stories may be short, but the mental fires they will ignite are anything but small.

Hello. I am Daniel Handler, the author of this book. Did you know that authors often write the summaries that appear on their book's dust jacket? You might want to think about that the next time you read something like, "A dazzling page-turner, this novel shows an internationally acclaimed storyteller at the height of his astonishing powers." Adverbs is a novel about love -- a bunch of different people, in and out of different kinds of love. At the start of the novel, Andrea is in love with David -- or maybe it's Joe -- who instead falls in love with Peter in a taxi. At the end of the novel, it's Joe who's in the taxi, falling in love with Andrea, although it might not be Andrea, or in any case it might not be the same Andrea, as Andrea is a very common name. So is Allison, who is married to Adrian in the middle of the novel, although in the middle of the ocean she considers a fling with Keith and also with Steve, whom she meets in an automobile, unless it's not the same Allison who meets the Snow Queen in a casino, or the same Steve who meets Eddie in the middle of the forest. . . . It might sound confusing, but that's love, and as the author -- me -- says, "It is not the nouns. The miracle is the adverbs, the way things are done." This novel is about people trying to find love in the ways it is done before the volcano erupts and the miracle ends. Yes, there's a volcano in the novel. In my opinion a volcano automatically makes a story more interesting.

George Bernard Shaw once said: "Youth is wasted on the young." Hopefully, you didn't waste yours! Growing up as six-year-old child working in the coal mines of England in the 19th century, for example, precluded anything even close to what today would be considered a "normal childhood," much less giving you a good chance of living past 30. Your chances of surviving to old age were somewhat better if you were born during the Great Depression, though then, many children often went to bed hungry. Compare their lives to those of children born after World War II. This anthology comprises 73 stories related to childhood selected from the 438 stories found in Books 1 through 6, incl., of the Creative Ink, Flashy Fiction anthologies. The stories, each 250 words or fewer in length, are best compared to a handful of peanuts or M&M's. Which is to say, they're tiny, bite-sized morsels that won't let you stop with one!
