Excerpt from The Vermont Historical Gazetteer, 1867, Vol. 1 of 3: A Magazine Embracing a History of Each Town, Civil, Ecclesiastical, Biographical and Military; Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Chittenden and Essex Counties The town of Addison lies on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, its southern line being a little southeast of the old forts at Crown Point. It Originally contained acres more than a six-mile township. A small portion lying east of Snake Mountain has been set Off to Wey bridge. It is very level, except the extreme east ern limit, where Snake Mountain lifts its head, and furnishes some splendid views Of the sur rounding country. The soil is principally clay, well overlaid with humus in the vicinity of the moun tain; the soil'is a strong loam, and on the shores of the lake the shell limestone crops out, giving a mixture of marl and loam. These two portions are well adapted to fruit-growing. Dead Creek, Hospital Creek, Ward's Creek, and Otter Creek, are its streams; no valuable water-power is within its limits, though formerly several saw-mills and clothing-works were in Operation.
