Excerpt from Index to Literature Relating to Animal Industry: Publications of the Department of Agriculture, 1837 to 1898 Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of an Index to Literature Relating to Animal Industry in the Publications of the Department of Agriculture, 1837 to 1898, prepared by George F. Thompson, Editorial Clerk, Bureau of Animal Industry, and to recommend the publication of the same as Bulletin No. 5 of this Division. This index renders available for reference and use a large amount of very valuable matter now so scattered in various bulletins and reports as to be almost worthless. Three indexes of a similar character have already been published by this Division, which has undertaken to continue such work as far as its other duties will permit. Moreover, at the time this index was undertaken Mr. Thompson was in charge of the document section of this Division, and since his transfer to the Bureau of Animal Industry he has continued the work in addition to his other labors and mostly in his own time. Considering the magnitude of the undertaking, the work has been completed in a short time, and will, it is believed, be valuable to all who are interested in the animal industry of the country.
