Marker is a tag which is either scorable or apparent for identification of an individual of traits associated with an individual. A molecular marker is the change in nucleic acid sequence or conformation which can be utilized for identification or classification of an individual. Molecular markers directly reveal the polymorphism at the level of DNA. These are tags that can be used to identify specific genes and locate them in relation to other genes. Genetically engineered (GE) crops were first introduced commercially in the 1990s. After two decades of production, some groups and individuals remain critical of the technology based on their concerns about possible adverse effects on human health, the environment, and ethical considerations. During the past 15 years, cellular and molecular approaches have emerged as valuable adjuncts to supplement and complement conventional breeding methods for a wide variety of crop plants. Remarkable achievements have been made in the production, characterization, field evaluation and commercialization of transgenic crop varieties worldwide.
