Excerpt from In the Sixties The colonial days of our sires have been given to us in book and story, and of their everyday life have we heard in wildest romance; while the tale of the pioneer, who first invaded our primeval forests, has been handed down in all its weird adventure and heroism. Wealth has been represented in its glittering array; poverty in its ragged attire, even the slums of our great cities have been pictured to us in truth and fable; but the former operative of our New England mills, and the usages of those early days, have been largely lost to the public, and suffered to remain enveloped in the shadows of the past. In the earlier days of our history, the sites of our extensive cities were but sparsely settled towns, peopled by a farming community, who gained from the grudging soil a subsistence, but found few dollars for the less positive wants of a numerous family. Then, as a day star to woman, came the cotton mill, and gave to her fettered ambition the first chance to show the world her latent power for good. To the grasping of this first opportunity may we not trace (in part), the individuality and self-supporting independence which characterizes the woman and girl of to-day. With Yankee energy these mills were pushed forward, till in the sixties, they were to be found on many of our rivers and streams. In sending forth a work touching the gone-by period, we are not thoughtless of the many discouragements to be met, writers of name and experience, and books whose number is legion. Excerpt from How Beauty Was Saved: And Other Memories of the Sixties In the summer of 1862, in the Bayou Manchac country near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, there was a modest little schoolhouse called the "Dove's Nest." To that school came two young girls to complete a course of study begun in Baton Rouge before the Federals captured that city. Excerpt from Portraits of the Sixties The early sixties have left a clear and deep impression on my memory. It was in the earliest of the sixties that I settled in London for a life of journalism and literature, to be much interrupted afterwards by politics. The London of the early sixties had no Thames Embankment and no underground railways and no tram-cars; the Law Courts on the Strand had not yet been dreamed of, and some of the judges still held their tribunals within enclosures opening from what I may call the off-side of Westminster Hall. But the outer aspect of London street life was not very different from that which we can contemplate at the present day. The hansom-cabs and the "growlers," familiar to all eyes now, were familiar to all eyes then. The great, palatial restaurants where fashion now entertains its friends at luncheons, dinners, and suppers were not in existence then, and the smart Londoner of the early sixties would not have thought of inviting his friends to a banquet in the taverns of the time. I may observe that the word "smart" used as I have just used it in the conventional language of the present reign would have conveyed no such meaning to the mind of a Londoner in the sixties. Excerpt from The War of the 'Sixties With the large number of books on our library shelves containing such a vast amount of information concerning the four years of war between the North and the South, it would seem almost presumptuous to attempt to add to it, yet it is hoped that this volume will be an addition, of both interest and value. There are some of the survivors of that war who think that they can give a detailed history of it, with minute descriptions of all the engagements they were in. The Editor gravely doubts this assumption. That there are a very large number who were especially impressed with one or more incidents there is no doubt. To such I have appealed for contributions, and from such only have I accepted articles for publication. My aim has been to collect real incidents - real facts from real participants - from persons who were there. These pages are not sectional, for it will be found that both the Union soldier and the Confederate have contributed. But two or three of the articles have been published before. One or two appeared several years ago in Harper's Weekly, but the manuscripts of these were sent to me by the authors, and Harper & Brothers kindly permitted their use here. To both I am indebted, as, indeed, I am indebted to all contributors. There have come to me scores of letters from the North and South, conveying the most cordial good wishes, and expressing pleasure at the prospect of the publication of this book. I am particularly grateful to Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Pickett, - distinguished women, - widows of two famous generals, a Union and a Confederate, who, amid a busy life, cheerfully found time to contribute an article each, and expressed an earnest hope for the early appearance of this book. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
