Excerpt from In the Land of the Lion and Sun, or Modern Persia: Being Experiences of Life in Persia During a Residence of Fifteen Years in Various Parts of That Country From 1866 to 1881 In a personal narrative, it is necessary to use a good many 1's; and to avoid being obscure, I fear I have been at times over minute, but I have preferred this to the risk of giving a false impression. The author was born into a Christian family in the village of Geogtapha not far from Oroomiah (or Urmia or Urūmīyah, Iran). Educated at various Protestant schools, he eventually took Holy Orders and several years later fled over the mountains into Russia. From there he travelled to Britain (where he stayed for for three years and learned the language) and ended up in the USA (1898). This book is a memoir of his life as a missionary and his views on the country of his birth after witnessing atrocities against Christians. It also has additional information on Mohammed and Mohammedanism, fire worshipers, the Kurds, the Armenians, and the Nestorians-Assyrians.
