Excerpt from In Beaver World One autumn my entire time was spent in mak ing observations and watching the activities of beaver in fourteen colonies. Sixty-four days in succession I visited these colonies, three of them twice daily. These daily investigations enabled me to see the preparations for winter from begin ning to end. They also enabled me to understand details which with infrequent visits I could not have even discovered. During this autumn I saw two houses built and a number of old ones repaired and plastered. I also saw the digging of one canal, the repairing of a number of old dams, and the building of two new ones. In three of these colonies I tallied each day the additional number of trees cut for harvest. 1 saw many trees felled, and noted the manner in which they were moved by land and oated by water. Excerpt from The American Beaver and His Works The publication of Cuviers Animal Kingdom established an epoch in the science of zoology. This eminent scholar brought to his subject the critical and reflective powers of a great intellect, and the varied and profound acquirements of a laborious life. Having possessed himself of the results of antecedent as well as contemporary investigations, and extended his researches with more or less exactness, over the entire animal kingdom, he was enabled to construct, upon the System of Nature, that remarkable system for the classification of animals, which now forms the basis of zoological science. This system of classification is founded exclusively upon the anatomical structure of animals, whence comparative anatomy is the source of its materials. It not only rejects the habits and properties of animals as immaterial and transient, but it also leaves out of consideration their mental endowments, which, however important in other respects, were incapable of affording a basis of classification. Under its clear and definite discriminations all the species of each of the four great branches of the animal kingdom are seen in intelligible and harmonious relations, notwithstanding their striking diversities of form. Unity of type runs through the structural organization of all the individuals comprised in each of these branches. The grandeur of this fourfold plan of creation is not more impressive than the wonderful adaptation of the surrounding elements to the condition and wants of the multitude of animal organisms which God has made. Excerpt from The Beaver: Its Work and Its Ways The present book is in no sense a scientific monograph of the beaver. My desire has been to produce something for the lay reader, for the one who cares nothing about subspecies and such matters, but who wants to learn some thing about the most interesting wild animal on the North American continent, for such the beaver seems to me to be, and judging from my experience with the tourists in the Yellowstone, I am not alone in that opinion. At Camp Roosevelt the visitors were more interested in the beavers than they were in the bears, and that is saying much. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; May, 1922 Thus there is much interest attached to the name of this province. It was, as recorded, given by the good queen whose long reign brought such great lustre on the empire that it will always be known in history as the Victorian Age - famous in literature, art, science and religion. And no one encouraged these great elements by which empires live so much as the illustrious woman who held her throne secure, broad-based upon her people's willand compassed by the inviolate sea. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; November, 1921 To unify the interests of the two con cerns, now become one, and to rid the Company of the double equipment of forts and men (for in almost every place east of the Rocky Mountains wherever one company had placed a fort there its opponent had also built one) was a work requiring diplomacy and deter mination, which occupied him for about three years. Thus, in 1824, Simpson had leisure to give attention to conditions west of the Rocky Mountains. At that time there existed some half a dozen forts, or trading posts, on the headwaters of the Fraser and the Columbia; but on the coast there Was only one, Astoria, or, as it was then called, Fort George, at the mouth of the Columbia river. From that point to the Russian settle ment at Sitka, in Alaska, a distance of about seven hundred miles, no trading post existed; the whole of that great region, including the involved shore line of our province, was exploited by the itinerant trading vessels from Bos ton - the Boston Peddlers as they were sneeringly denominated. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: September, 1922 Lord Strathcona was a princely giver to all good causes, as the hospitals, churches, schools and universities of Canada know. He was very simple hearted and unaffected in his manner, and those of us who were occasionally his guests in his own house will always recall the gracious, kindly, gentle old man who assumed no airs but made everyone feel at home. He died at an advanced age, repeating in his closing hours one of the old Scottish paraphrases, O God of Bethel, as he passed into the unseen. By this man's name many schools and places are called in Canada. And pupils will find much food for study in the story of his life. Excerpt from The Beaver, Vol. 2: A Journal of Progress; April, 1922 Poor old Captain W an able steamboat man, but when trouble of any kind arose 'he became wild with excitement and his language was unwritable. The Northcote made the forks of the Saskatchewan all right, but there was not water enough to ascend the Cole's falls; so the freight was unloaded there and hauled up to Prince Albert by team a distance of about fifty miles.
