Excerpt from One Hundred Best American Poems This grouping of American poems had its rise in the welcome accorded to a little volume entitled The Hundred Best English Poems, issued by the same publishers. To select one hundred examples from the best work by our American poets, excluding all living authors, and avoiding an undue proportion of pieces by the few acknowledged to be preeminent, has been a puzzling although a pleasant task. Of course, no two editors would select the same hundred pieces from the sixty-four poets here represented. Any one familiar with our poeti cal literature will miss here certain favorites, and perhaps would criticize some of the selec tions. This is inevitable. In The Vintage Book of African American Poetry, editors Michael S. Harper and Anthony Walton present the definitive collection of black verse in the United States--200 years of vision, struggle, power, beauty, and triumph from 52 outstanding poets. From the neoclassical stylings of slave-born Phillis Wheatley to the wistful lyricism of Paul Lawrence Dunbar . . . the rigorous wisdom of Gwendolyn Brooks...the chiseled modernism of Robert Hayden...the extraordinary prosody of Sterling A. Brown...the breathtaking, expansive narratives of Rita Dove...the plaintive rhapsodies of an imprisoned Elderidge Knight . . . The postmodern artistry of Yusef Komunyaka. Here, too, is a landmark exploration of lesser-known artists whose efforts birthed the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts movements--and changed forever our national literature and the course of America itself. Meticulously researched, thoughtfully structured, The Vintage Book of African-American Poetry is a collection of inestimable value to students, educators, and all those interested in the ever-evolving tradition that is American poetry.

Excerpt from Poems of American History The thread of narrative upon which the poems have been strung together has been made as slight as possible, just strong enough to carrv the reader understandingly from one poem to the next. The notes, too, have been limited to the explanation of such allusions as are not likely to be found in the ordinary works of reference, with here and there an account of the circumstances which caused the lines to be written, or an indication of source, where the source is unusual. Every available source has been drawn upon the works of all the better known and many of the minor American and English poets, anthologies, newspaper collections, magazines, collec tions of Americana and especially of broadsides in a word, American and English poetry generally. Excerpt from American Poems This is, as far as I know, the first miscellaneous collection of American Poetry, of any considerable size, that has been published in England. It gives examples from 65 authors (including two anonymous), - the total number of the compositions being 255. In America there have naturally been several such compilations. The first project of the kind was that of James Rivington, a printer in New York, who in 1773 proposed to publish a collection on the same plan as Dodsley's in England. The revolution of the American colonies stopped this scheme. In 1791 appeared Matthew Carey's Beauties of Poetry, British and American, in which nineteen native writers were represented. Various other works of the same class followed; among which may be named those of Samuel Kettell in 1829, and of the poet Bryant in 1839, and especially that of Mr. Rufus Willmot Griswold in 1842. Excerpt from In American-Poems I wished I'd took the ring, not the Victrola. You get so tired of records, hearin' an' hearin' 'em, And when a person don't have much to spend They feel they shouldn't ought to be so wasteful. And then these warm nights makes it slow inside, And sittin's lovely down there by the lake Where him and me would always use ta go.
