In a Different Place offers a richly textured account of a modern pilgrimage, combining ethnographic detail, theory, and personal reflection. Visited by thousands of pilgrims yearly, the Church of the Madonna of the Annunciation on the Aegean island of Tinos is a site where different interests--sacred and secular, local and national, personal and official--all come together. Exploring the shrine and its surrounding town, Jill Dubisch shares her insights into the intersection of social, religious, and political life in Greece. Along the way she develops the idea of pilgrimage-journeying away from home in search of the miraculous--as a metaphor for anthropological fieldwork. This highly readable work offers us the opportunity to share one anthropologist's personal and professional journey and to see in a "different place" the inadequacy of such conventional anthropological categories as theory versus data, rationality versus emotion, and the observer versus the observed. Dubisch examines in detail the process of pilgrimage itself, its relationship to Orthodox belief and practice, the motivations and behavior of pilgrims, the relationship between religion and Greek national identity, and the gendered nature of religious roles. Seeking to evoke rather than simply describe, her book presents readers with a sense of the emotion, color, and power of pilgrimage at this Greek island shrine.

Megadeth: Another Time, A Different Place gives the audience a front-row seat into the early days and meteoric rise of this young band who would become one of the most influential groups of all time and, with Anthrax, Slayer, and Metallica, consistently touted among the best "thrash metal" bands ever to cross the stage. This is the first Megadeth photography book and only the second book documenting their rise to rock glory, including rare, never-before-seen photographs representing a small but crucial period of time in their career. Hale's photographs, from intimate backstage photographs to screaming, kinetic live shots, are the images of a young band prepared to take on the world. "The 'work' that you hold in your hands now is the work of a friend, who is also a 'photo-grrrrrrr-apher,' and who has captured the very essence of my career: hungry, gritty, hard, cold, impersonal, personal, and very personal. Also, the sensitive unseen side of me, which was somewhat of an anomaly with the public and left me an enigma to my peers." -Dave Mustaine from the Foreword

Download In a Space in a Different Place Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book is about life's experiences, tragedies, upsets, disappointments, and the restructuring of one's thought process to build character from inside out with extreme power. However, it connects with all that life has served us on a silver platter the good, bad, and the ugly thrusting us into a space in a different place where the spirit operates off what we did not know we had on the inside of us. The spirit of survival and words of encouragement driving us to higher heights setting us up for the blessing knowing that through it all God had his hands on us and we survived it all and we are still here.

"World war-1! World war-2!! World war-3? Russia fights Ukraine! Hamas attacks Israel ! Rest of the world is fanning these wars. Is the world destined for wars only? Did God create the earth as a battlefield; and its inhabitants for wars only? Countries together created institutions like the United Nations, International Court Of Justice, World Health Organization, etc. Did we succeed? We created deadlier weapons than before. Atom Bombs! WMD! Chemical Bombs and Deadly Virus! The world could be a different place, had we followed the common code of conduct universally, the world over! This book deals with those ten golden principles, which could form the universally accepted code of conduct for all of this earth's inhabitants. "

Download Culture and the City Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This edited collection will examine the way in which cities are imagined, experienced and shaped by those who reside within them, those who manage or govern them, and those who, as visitor, tourist or traveller, pass through them. Attention will be paid to the influence that these various inhabitants have on city life and living and the dialectic that exists between their sometimes collective and sometimes divergent, perceptions and uses of city space. In conjunction with this, the collection will explore the ways in which local culture and cultural policy are used by public and private interests as the framework for changing the image and amenity of the city in order to raise its profile and attract tourists. The book contributes to discussions of the increasingly high profile place that cultural programs have in urban regeneration initiatives and explore the tensions, conflicts and negotiations that emerge in urban spaces as a result of policy and culture coming together. Papers will be sought from researchers around the world with a view to examining the nexus between tourism, leisure and cultural programming from a number of perspectives and with reference to a range of international case studies. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events.
