The proposed substructure system described in this report has been developed to improve the aesthetics and reduce the construction time of the support structures for standard bridges. The form of the proposed substructures is highly attractive, and is a distinct improvement over many traditional short- and medium-span bridge substructures. The substructure system developed is particularly well-suited for precasting, although the geometric form could be cast-in-situ. Precasting would result in the increased use of high performance concrete in the substructures. The use of such concrete will bring improved durability since the high performance concrete is greatly resistant to ingress of moisture and chlorides. In addition, the greater compressive strength of the high performance concretes is utilized for reducing the handling weight and dead load of the substructure units. The bent cap units are more complex than traditional cast-in-place bent caps but appear feasible for plant production or large-scale, cast-on-site projects.

This book contains the proceedings of the international workshop “Designing and Building with Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC): State of the Art and Development”, organized by AFGC, the French Association for Civil Engineering and French branch of fib, in Marseille (France), November 17-18, 2009. This workshop was focused on the experience of a lot of recent UHPFRC realizations. Through more than 50 papers, this book details the experience of many countries in UHPFRC construction and design, including projects from Japan, Germany, Australia, Austria, USA, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada... and France. The projects are categorized as novel architectural solutions, new frontiers for bridges, new equipments and structural components, and extending the service life of structures. The last part presents major research results, durability and sustainability aspects, and the updated AFGC Recommendations on UHPFRC.

"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 733: High-Performance/High-Strength Lightweight Concrete for Bridge Girders and Decks presents proposed changes to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) bridge design and construction specifications to address the use of lightweight concrete in bridge girders and decks. The proposed specifications are designed to help highway agencies evaluate between comparable designs of lightweight and normal weight concrete bridge elements so that an agency's ultimate selection will yield the greatest economic benefit. The attachments contained in the research agency's final report provide elaborations and detail on several aspects of the research. Attachments A and B provide proposed changes to AASHTO LRFD bridge design and bridge construction specifications, respectively; these are included in the print and PDF version of the report. Attachments C through R are available for download below. Attachments C, D, and E contain a detailed literature review, survey results, and a literature summary and the approved work plan, respectively. Attachment C; Attachment D ; Attachment E; Attachments F through M provide details of the experimental program that were not able to be included in the body of this report. Attachment F; Attachment G; Attachment H; Attachment I; Attachment J; Attachment K; Attachment L; Attachment M. Attachments N through Q present design examples of bridges containing lightweight concrete and details of the parametric study. Attachment N; Attachment O; Attachment P; Attachment Q. Attachment R is a detailed reference list."--Publication information.
