Download Improving Health Through Nutrition Research: an Overview of the U. S. Nutrition Research System Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This report explores the structure and function of the U.S. nutrition research system, with an emphasis on trends in Federal support. It describes how nutrition research is used, especially for nutrition education and communication, but also for regulation and food assistance. The report uses the Human Nutrition Research Information Management database maintained by the National Institutes of Health to analyze longterm trends. Federal investments in nutrition research grew from 1985 to 2009 in real terms, but the portfolio of research changed. Over time, the share of nutrition research support by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services increased while support by the U.S. Department of Agriculture decreased. This shift changed how research topics were selected and funded within the Federal portfolio. More research is funded through competitive grants than through intramural or formula funding, and a broader set of academic institutions now participates in nutrition research.

Download Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

Download Progress Made in Federal Human Nutrition Research Planning and Coordination Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Abstract: An overview of progress in coordinating Federal nutrition research efforts and identifying areas in need of improvement are provided. Much progress has been made within and among Federal human nutrition research departments and agencies since Congress called for improved coordination in the Food and Agriculture Act of 1977. It is recommended that such coordination efforts continue and that agencies and departments plan their research efforts in conjunction with other Federal supporters of nutrition research to avoid duplication or inadequate coverage. The director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy should direct the Joint Subcommittee on Human Nutrition Research to develop a Federal nutrition research plan with input from agencies and departments which engage in human nutrition research. This document records the oral and written testimony given at a Congressional hearing on nutrition research and education as carried out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Witnesses included officials from the Department, professors and administrators from various university nutrition programs, and medical doctors. Testimony stressed the expanding role that nutrition is playing and should play in the improvement of the health of Americans. More nutrition research was advocated, as well as more use of such research on the local level, such as through the Cooperative Extension Service and training for local medical practitioners. Increasing nutrition knowledge and action by the public could substantially lower health care costs, and testimony supported Department of Agriculture programs such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) that aim to prevent low birth weight babies. This fourth edition brings together a diverse range of experts in nutrition-related areas to discuss recent thinking and discoveries in nutrition, especially in relation to topics that have the greatest capacity to improve human health and nutritional implementation. An overview of nutrition science in the third decade of the twenty-first century reveals that much water has flown under the bridge of the advancing river that is nutrition research and practice. With these large accumulations of developments in the field of nutrition, the need for a new edition of this book is obvious. Our vastly improved nutrition knowledge gives us the capability of preventing a sizable fraction of the chronic diseases that afflict the people of our world, but only if these discoveries can be translated into effective action at the population level. Nutritional Health endeavours to address the needs of those who would most benefit from up-to-date information on key areas in the field of nutrition. The book starts with a discussion of the nature of nutritional research then moves into an overview of the most important aspects of the complex interactions between diet, its nutrient components, and their impacts on disease states, and on those health conditions that increase the risk of chronic diseases. Parts three and four discuss diet and include new chapters on the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, the flexitarian diet, and the low-carbohydrate diet. The final two parts of the book discuss emerging trends in nutrition science, such as gut microbiome and sustainable diet, and areas of controversy in nutrition, such as the influence of the food industry and dietary supplements. Up to date and comprehensive, Nutritional Health: Strategies for Disease Prevention, Fourth Edition offers physicians, dietitians, and nutritionists a practical, data-driven, integrated resource to help evaluate the critical role of nutrition.
