Although many national studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of magnet programs, there is limited research involving math, science, and technology magnet schools and their influence on student academic performance, especially at the middle school level. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a statistical difference existed between those students' academic achievement who participated in math, science, and technology magnet programs in middle school and those who did not. Specifically, this study explored possible differences of students' academic achievement in math and science as measured by the state achievement test as a function of participation in a math, science, and technology magnet program and non-magnet program for the full three years of middle school (i.e., sixth- through eighth-grade). In addition, this study examined if ethnicity, socioeconomic, and/or gender have a moderating effect on math and/or science achievement. This study was conducted in a large urban school district in Texas. The test scores of a total of 1,551 eighth grade students who had participated in math, science, and technology magnet programs and non-magnet programs for the full three years of middle schools were analyzed. To measure student achievement, the math and science Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) exams were examined. In general, the students who participated in the magnet programs had higher math and science achievement as measured by the TAKS exams. There are several conclusions and recommendations as a result of this research. In general, it is recommended that district leaders must carefully analyze and place great emphasis upon the following areas: (a) the financial cost of adequately funding a magnet program; (b) the accountability standards; and (c) the ultimate goal of magnet programs. This research has demonstrated in a general framework that magnet programs do produce higher achieving students. Therefore, appropriate, immediate, and necessary steps must be taken to ensure equity in access to high quality magnet programs for all students.

Educational leaders must support teachers in facilitating successful technology integration to impact teaching and learning. To provide this support, leaders need to understand what comprises effective integration of technology to have an impact on student achievement. This study examined the relationship between the degree to which school campuses had implemented technology into teaching and learning and the corresponding impact on student performance in reading and mathematics. The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) scores for all Texas middle schools for the school year 2010-11 were correlated with three components in the Teaching and Learning area of the Texas Campus Student Technology and Readiness (STaR) Chart. Probit regression analyses of the three target areas on the student scores showed that Patterns of Classroom Use and Content Area Connections were each significantly uniquely predictive of achievement results. Leaders should ensure that teachers are equipped to integrate technology in their content.

Some informal discussions among educators regarding motivation of students and academic performance have included the topic of magnet schools. The premise is that a focused theme, such as an aspect of science, positively affects student motivation and academic achievement. However, there is limited research involving magnet schools and their influence on student motivation and academic performance. This study provides empirical data for the discussion about magnet schools influence on motivation and academic ability. This study utilized path analysis in a structural equation modeling framework to simultaneously investigate the relationships between demographic exogenous independent variables, the independent variable of attending a science or technology magnet middle school, and the dependent variables of motivation to learn science and academic achievement in science. Due to the categorical nature of the variables, Bayesian statistical analysis was used to calculate the path coefficients and the standardized effects for each relationship in the model. The coefficients of determination were calculated to determine the amount of variance each path explained. Only five of 21 paths had statistical significance. Only one of the five statistically significant paths (Attended Magnet School to Motivation to Learn Science) explained a noteworthy amount (45.8%) of the variance.

Despite the impetus from professional organizations for science and math integration, evidence in support of such efforts in raising both science and mathematics achievement is scarce, particularly for underrepresented students. The available literature is mixed especially regarding impact on mathematics outcomes. This exploratory study documents the impact of the Middle School Math and Science (MS)2 Integration project based on the results of the internal evaluation of an intensive teacher training model for integrated science and mathematics in middle school. Multivariate analysis of variance shows (MS)2 positively impacted middle school students,Äô science and mathematics knowledge in this sample of diverse students. Overall, the (MS)2 group outperformed the comparison group. There was also evidence that students who received (MS)2 integrated instruction in science classrooms slightly outperformed those who received (MS)2 integrated instruction in math classrooms. Multiple regression results indicated that (MS)2 group membership and opportunity to learn through integrated instruction were significant predictors of students,Äô science and mathematics scores. Although students in (MS)2 classrooms were more likely to have higher achievement scores, the frequency of integrated instruction opportunities also significantly predicted student achievement, particularly in mathematics classrooms. Ethnicity and gender were not significant predictors of student scores. Implications are discussed.
