A design is presented for a Content Addressable Array Parallel Processor (CAAPP) which is both practical and feasible. Its practicality stems from an extensive program of research into real applications of content addressability and parallelism. The feasibility of the design stems from development under a set of conservative engineering constraints tied to limitations of VLSI technology. The authors then describe the implementation of two procedures for image processing on the CAAPP. The first performs image convolutions very quickly. It is shown that this algorithm can be generalized to perform convolutions with increased mask size with only a moderate reduction in speed. The second uses the CAAPP to quickly and robustly decompose an optic flow field into its rotational and translational components to recover sensor motion parameters. It is important to note that this latter is made possible only by the combination of associativity and array processing that our design provides. (Author).

Evaluation of Multicomputers for Imaging Processing covers the proceedings of the 1984 Tanque Verde Workshop, held in Tucson. This book is organized into four parts encompassing 17 chapters that summarize the benchmark evaluation efforts specific to multicomputer systems designed for the efficient execution of image processing tasks. The first part considers the basic problem of benchmarking and presents an evaluation procedure or sets of instructions for establishing benchmark routines, tasks, and procedures. The next part deals with the simulation and evaluation. This part first examines semiconductor chips designed for use in imaging processing followed by the presentation of formulas for measuring algorithms, architecture efficiency, speedup, and processing element utilization for SIMD/MIMD multicomputers. This part also considers the image processing systems composed of various types of networks of processing elements. The third part describes a content-addressable array and its applications to machine vision, as well as the architecture and programming methods of the WARP multicomputer. This part further looks into the elevation measurements techniques by registering stereo pairs obtained from aerial photography using ""pass point"" correlation methods. The concluding part highlights the hardware implementations of general-purpose image processing systems with associated performance evaluations. Computer scientists and engineers will greatly benefit from this book.

Due to continual progress in the large-scale integration of semiconductor circuits, parallel computing principles can already be met in low-cost sys tems: numerous examples exist in image processing, for which special hard ware is implementable with quite modest resources even by nonprofessional designers. Principles of content addressing, if thoroughly understood, can thereby be applied effectively using standard components. On the other hand, mass storage based on associative principles still exists only in the long term plans of computer technologists. This situation is somewhat confused by the fact that certain expectations are held for the development of new storage media such as optical memories and "spin glasses" (metal alloys with low-density magnetic impurities). Their technologies, however, may not ripen until after "fifth generation" computers have been built. It seems that software methods for content addressing, especially those based on hash coding principles, are still holding their position firmly, and a few innovations have been developed recently. As they need no special hardware, one might expect that they will spread to a wide circle of users. This monograph is based on an extensive literature survey, most of which was published in the First Edition. I have added Chap. ?, which contains a review of more recent work. This updated book now has references to over 1200 original publications. In the editing of the new material, I received valuable help from Anneli HeimbUrger, M. Sc. , and Mrs. Leila Koivisto.

During this quarter we have finalized the low to intermediate level interfac hardward design for the IUA. We have also been examining various network topologies for communications within the intermediate level of the IUA. At the minimum we will support a mesh with an ouverlayed hypercube However, we are looking into a fully programable network topology that will allow us to experiment with different processor interconnection schemes. Keywords: Image understanding algorithm; Computer architecture; Hough transform; Convex hull; Voronoi diagram; 3-D models.

The field of computer vision combines techniques from physics, mathematics, psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to examine how machines might construct meaningful descriptions of their surrounding environment. The editors of this volume, prominent researchers and leaders of the SRI International AI Center Perception Group, have selected sixty papers, most published since 1980, with the viewpoint that computer vision is concerned with solving seven basic problems: Reconstructing 3D scenes from 2D images Decomposing images into their component parts Recognizing and assigning labels to scene objects Deducing and describing relations among scene objects Determining the nature of computer architectures that can support the visual function Representing abstractions in the world of computer memory Matching stored descriptions to image representation Each chapter of this volume addresses one of these problems through an introductory discussion, which identifies major ideas and summarizes approaches, and through reprints of key research papers. Two appendices on crucial assumptions in image interpretation and on parallel architectures for vision applications, a glossary of technical terms, and a comprehensive bibliography and index complete the volume.
