The two major purposes of this study were to gather data relative to the knowledge and attitudes toward sexual expression among sixty-five to seventy-four year olds and to determine whether or not significant differences existed between the sexes. The study focused on six research questions: These were: 1. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of overall knowledge related to sexual expression? 2. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of specific knowledge categories related to sexual expression? 3. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of overall attitudes related to sexual expression? 4. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of specific attitude categories related to sexual expression? 5. Are there significant differences between older females and males in terms of overall knowledge when they are grouped according to: marital status, education, religious attendance, self perceived health status and occupation? 6. Are there significant differences between older females and males in terms of overall attitudes when they are grouped according to: marital status, education, religious attendance, self perceived health status and occupation? The population selected for study was a voluntary organization of older adults, who resided in Marion County, Oregon. Thirty-two members, ages sixty-five to seventy-four who volunteered to participate in this study comprised the sample. A structured interview guide was utilized for data collection. Validity of the instrument was established through input from professional experts. Reliability was determined by comparing consistency of responses between three groups: a pilot test group, one in-study group matched to the pilot group and one in-study group selected at random. Both parametric and non-parametric statistical tools were used to analyze the data. These included the t test for research question one; Mann Whitney U for research questions two through four; the f test for research question five; and Chi Square for research question six. Although some minor differences were found to exist between males and females in terms of knowledge and attitudes regarding sexual expression, the differences were not found to be significant at the.05 level. Results of the study indicated the existence of misinformation, conflicting attitudes, and the desire for sexuality information by older adults. Because the sample in this study was found to be non-representative of the general older population, results may not be generalizable. Summaries of personal characteristics and self perception can be located in Tables 7 and 8. Suggestions for future replications of the study are made. Recommendations and implications for educators and service providers who work with older adults are also included.

This literature review was undertaken in order to determine what caregivers needed to know about elderly sexuality, to determine the needs of elderly people related to their sexuality, and to determine how caregivers could best assist them in meeting those needs. In selecting materials to be annotated for this book, the first priority was given to empirical studies. Also included were articles by prominent practitioners and researchers interested in elderly sexuality, literature reviews, and books written for the lay population which are often cited in the professional literature. In addition to seeking knowledge about elderly sexuality and understanding attitudes about sexuality, this literature review sought information about measurement issues and measurement instruments frequently used in research within elderly populations. Also of interest were investigations of educational and training programs involving caregivers.

Across the globe, both in developed and developing countries, the population is rapidly ageing. In the fields of sexual and relationship therapy and sexual health, ageing has not been an issue of priority. Too often, ageing is thought of as a process that relates to problems, deficits, and taboos, and less to pleasure, change, growth and diversity. It is treated as a separate life stage and not a process throughout the lifecycle. Sexuality and sexual health are important parts of the lives of older people, as they have a significant impact on quality of life, psychological well-being and physical health, as well as social and family life. This book brings together contributions from those currently writing on and researching ageing as it relates, in a therapeutic context, to gender identity, to sex and sexuality, and to intimate relationships. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sexual and Relationship Therapy.

Abstract: Despite the fact that China's population is rapidly aging, the sexual behaviors of adults aged 60 or above are severely understudied. The present research is an attempt to advance understanding of sexual behaviors among older Chinese. It explores the subjective sexual experiences of older adults and examines the prevalence, characteristics and correlates of sexual behaviors of community dwelling older adults in an urban Chinese setting. The present research utilized a sequential mixed-method research design that comprises two separate studies. Study one is a qualitative exploration of subjective sexual experience and socio-cultural circumstances related to elder sexuality. 42 semi-structured in-depth interviews were individually conducted with older Chinese residing in Chengdu and Tianjin. Study Two involves scale translation. Three measures: Chinese Senior Adult Sexuality Scale (SASS), Dyadic Sexual Regulation Scale (DSRS) and the Gender Norm Attitude Scale (GNAS) were translated and adapted for use. In particular, forward and backward translation, consultation with internal and external expert panel, and pilot testing were employed. Results indicated that all adapted scales exhibited acceptable internal consistency with Cronbach's alphas ranging from .59 to .93. A representative sample of 688 older adults aged 60 or above randomly selected from six downtown districts in Tianjin to test an integrated model on sexual behaviors of older Chinese. In Study One, participants reported experience in other sexual behaviors such as orgasm and the use of lubricants and other products. The influence of socio-cultural contexts on participants' attitudes and sexual expression is evident. The goal of Study Two is to establish the prevalence of various sexual behaviors and to identify important factors relevant to the sexual behaviors using quantitative approach. Through a comprehensive review of the continuity theory, the sexual script theory, the theory of planned behavior and the bio-psycho-social perspective, the author proposes an integrated model of engagement of sexual behaviors involving demographic characteristics, as well as biological, psychological, and social factors. Of the 688 surveyed participants, 50% of older men and forty percent of older women reported engaging in at least one type of sexual behavior in study two. Sexual intercourse (44%) and caressing(43%)were the two most prevalent among the six designated types of sexual behaviors. The results show that level of sexual interest is a salient predictor of overall engagement in sexual behaviors(intercourse, sexual touch, oral sex, orgasm, use of sexual objects and initiation of sex) (ORs ranged from 2.05 to 3.36, p This research is among the first empirical endeavors to investigate six types of sexual behaviors in older Chinese. The study results provide preliminary support for an integrated bio-psycho-social model in explaining sexual behavior in older Chinese. Recommendations for research, policy, and practice are also discussed. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5446483 Subj
