Correspondence from I.B. Crawe to John Torrey, dated 1836-1837. In his first letter, dated March 31, 1836, Crawe approaches Torrey to ask for a letter of recommendation for a geologist position with the recently approved natural history survey of New York state; since Torrey does not know him, Crawe suggests consulting their mutual friend Asa Gray as to Crawe's qualifications. In the second letter, dated September 14, 1837, Crawe apologizes for not having duplicates of most of the plants Torrey has requested, but also includes a catalog of some fossils he has found in the rocks near the Black River in Jefferson County, New York.
