When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne - is a best-selling book of poetry by A. A. Milne. It was first published in 1924, and it was illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Several of the verses were set to music by Harold Fraser-Simson. The book begins with an introduction entitled "Just Before We Begin", which, in part, tells readers to imagine for themselves who the narrator is, and that it might be Christopher Robin. The 38th poem in the book, "Teddy Bear", that originally appeared in Punch magazine in February 1924, was the first appearance of the famous character Winnie-the-Pooh, first named "Mr. Edward Bear" by Christopher Robin Milne. In one of the illustrations of "Teddy Bear", Winnie-the-Pooh is shown wearing a shirt which was later coloured red when reproduced on a recording produced by Stephen Slesinger. This has become his standard appearance in the Disney adaptations. On 1 January 2020, When We Were Very Young entered the public domain in the United States, but remains protected in other countries[clarification needed], including the UK. Contents: "Corner of the Street" "Buckingham Palace" "Happiness" "The Christening" "Puppy and I" "Twinkle Toes" "The Four Friends" "Lines and Squares" "Brownie" "Independence" "Nursery Chairs" "Market Square" "Daffodowndilly" "Water Lilies" "Disobedience" "Spring Morning" "The Island" "The Three Foxes" "Politeness" "Jonathan Jo" "At the Zoo" "Rice Pudding" "The Wrong House" "Missing" "The King's Breakfast" "Hoppity" "At Home" "Summer Afternoon" "The Dormouse and the Doctor" "Shoes and Stockings" "Sand Between the Toes" "Knights and Ladies" "Little Bo Peep and Little Boy Blue" "The Mirror" "Halfway Down" "The Invaders" "Before Tea" "Teddy Bear" "Bad Sir Brian Botany" "In the Fashion" "The Alchemist" "Growing Up" "If I Were King" "Vespers"

If I Were King explores the story of a real-life poet, Francois Villon, who shows impressive character development when given a chance to win his love and save France. The story starts when Villon gets himself in trouble by giving his negative opinions of the king too freely. Unfortunately, King Louis was present in the tavern in disguise, and Villon got arrested. He is made Grand Constable of France for a week as a challenge to do a better job running the kingdom. However, he would be executed after a week of service unless he succeeds in an impossible task. McCarthy maintains suspense till the end of the story keeping the readers curious about Villon and his ability to escape execution and win the woman he loves. As the main character of this historical romance is based on the real-life poet François Villon, it acts as a window to 15th century France under the rule of Louis XI during a time of tension and turmoil between King Louis and the Duke of Burgundy. The Shakespearean undertones used to present the love story of the vagabond poet makes this work a remarkable romance.

In 1926, the world was introduced to a portly little bear named Winnie-the-Pooh. Along with his young friend, Christopher Robin, Pooh delighted readers from the very beginning. His often befuddled perceptions and adorable insights won the hearts of everyone around him, including his close group of friends. From the energetic Tigger to the dismal Eeyore, A. A. Milne created a charming bunch, both entertaining and inspirational. These simple creatures often reflected a small piece of all of us: humble, silly, wise, cautious, creative, and full of life. Remember when Piglet did a very grand thing, or Eeyore's almost-forgotten birthday? Gorgeous watercolor illustrations from Ernest H. Shepard appear in all their glory. With beautiful colors and simple lines, these images hold their own as classics. The tales, filled with superb story lines and lessons, will continue to capture the hearts of new generations.
