HauptbeschreibungGo North was the programmatic title of an international conference on Baltic Sea Region Studies that took place at Humboldt University of Berlin from April 4-6, 2005. It was hosted by the BalticStudyNet project, which is part of the European Union's Erasmus Mundus programme for the global promotion of European higher education. In order to discuss the past, present and future of Baltic Sea Region Studies, the Berlin conference brought together about fifty government representatives and scholars from all Baltic Sea Region countries, including Russia, as well as from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. The basic idea of the Go North conference was to encourage a fundamental change of perspective - away from intra-regional and towards extra-regional and truly global approaches to the Baltic Sea Region: How is the Baltic Sea region perceived when viewed, let's say, from Australia? What, if anything, would a Chinese student find typical, extraordinary, or even unique when looking at the region? Why should a scholar from Mexico, South Africa or India wish to do research in and/or about the Baltic Sea Region? Consequently, third country views on Europe's North and the Baltic Sea Region were a feature of many of the presentations and panel discussions during the conference, which are documented in this volume.

“Bruised, bloody, and barely dressed, she knew it was over. She had no doubt the Vikings would search for her if she tried to run—especially now, with their companion lying dead. It would be dark soon, and she had no idea where she could go or hide. Jilliand knew they would come for her. The Vikings were not likely to let this go—especially it being an attack by a woman. She was defeated. Weak and shaking, she stared at the man’s body. I think tonight I die.” Clare Gutierrez is a registered nurse who grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Colorado as one of four children. After living in Carlsbad, NM, for twenty-eight years, she now lives in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. She and her husband, Dr. Beto Gutierrez, host first-class photographers from the world over at Santa Clara Ranch, a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary. Jilliand is her third novel.

The Horde, book two in the I Am saga trilogy, continues the oral history being taught to the Cactus Monkeys by one of the Great Aero Teachers. It takes readers through the fight against the Order of Ra. Having saved and reclaimed their community, Clan MacLee now expands its influence into the world at large. While Sarah, Gina, and Ke'ira enter military service, JoAnn begins the reclamation of the free world's farmlands, and Amareah takes engineering with fabric to the next level. While the mothers of Clan MacLee strive openly, Gammon watches over their children as they grow and develop with assistance from creatures named holies. Learn how these amazing children guide the world from the shadow of their parents' greatness. The great leaps of advancement in robotics, metallurgy, cybernetics, and art are overshadowed by their family's faith. While teaching the true meanings of the Prophets' revelations, healing an entire culture, or designing weapons systems that will cut swathes of death and destruction through enemy formations, the children also learn what it means to be human. As the rest of Clan MacLee drafts the designs, Gammon leads the way in the most ambitious plan of ship construction ever attempted. In overseeing construction of a "grand canal" with its three-mile-across assembly building, the humble teacher and oarsman seeks to control the world's coastlines. I AM: An Alternate Saga of Biblical Proportions - Book Two: The Horde awaits adventurous sci-fi fans.

Once upon a time life was simpler. Information came to us through gossip, books, newspapers, the radio and newsreels at the movies. Then came television. Initially the first news shows were only 15 minutes in length but gradually expanded until now we have CNN with its 24-hour coverage. But none of this was going to compare to the master of all information inundation - the Internet. Information overload, once confined to the few, is now the headache of the many. Surely not all this information carries equal weight. Some, if not most, is out-right nonsense. How do we discern between accurate information and facts that are not? By detailing how science is a process, a method of obtaining truth, this book hopes to arm the reader with tools with which to apply intelligent thinking, thinking that is critical, skeptical and evidenced based. Once you know why microwave radiation cannot induce cancer you become impervious to the fears of cell phone use. Once you understand the laws of probability you are better equipped to decide whether or not it is prudent to buy that lottery ticket or, better yet, which games at Vegas give you the best chance of winning and which you should avoid as the plague. Yes, you can get your arms around Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Quantum Physics and the newest advances in neuroscience - the study of the brain, of consciousness, of awareness - the study of you. No, you do not need math and formulas. Science can even answer those riddles from childhood: 1. What came first, the chicken or the egg? 2. If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound? 3. Is it night that follows day or day that follows night?

Introduction I looked right at Big Jim and said, “I couldn’t find a bill of sale. And anyway you know that was a fake I.O.U, Jim. You get no horses here, but we got plenty of lead if you want some”. He sat there on his horse, for a few moments; I knew he was figuring the odds on what to do. The five men, he had with him had been easing their horses into position; It was very plain what they had in mind. Jim finally got the action started. “Well ok sonny, we will just be going”, said big Jim. But he didn’t go.

Best friends tell each other the truth – don't they? When North Stone's best friend Kelly Orton is found hanging lifeless in a tree, North knows for certain it wasn't suicide. Kelly had everything to live for – a loving boyfriend, a happy life, and most importantly of all, Kelly would never leave North all by herself. The girls have been friends since childhood, devoted to each other, soul sisters, or at least that's what North has always believed. But did Kelly feel the same way, or was she keeping secrets from her 'best friend' – deadly secrets... When the police refuse to take North's suspicions seriously, she sets out to investigate for herself. But her search soon takes her to a glamorous world with a seedy underbelly, and before long North is out of her depth and getting ever closer to danger. Determined to find the truth, she soon wishes that dead girls could lie, because the truth is too painful to believe... 'In this well written novel the author made me feel North's frustration, and enjoyed the flashbacks of her friendship with Kelly which illustrated their mutual dependence, or was it North's need for Kelly which made their bond so strong?' Anita Davison.

“Oddný Eir is an authentic author, philosopher and mystic. She weaves together diaries and fiction. She is the writer I feel can best express the female psyche of now and has bridged the gap between rural Iceland and Western philosophy. A true pioneer!!!!!!!!” —Björk The winner of the Icelandic Women’s Literature Prize in 2012, Land of Love and Ruins is the debut novel by a daring new voice in international fiction: Oddný Eir. Written in the form of a diary but with fantastical linguistic verve, the narrator sets out on a universal quest: to find a place to belong—and a way of being in the world. Paradoxically, her longing to settle down drives her to embark on all kinds of journeys, physical and mental, through time and space, in order to find answers to questions that concern not only her personally, but also the whole of humankind. She explores various modes of living, ponders different types of relationships and contemplates her bond with her family, land and nation; trying to find a balance between companionship and independence, movement and stability, past, present, and future. An enchanting blend of autobiography, diary, philosophical inquiry, and fantasy, Land of Love and Ruins is a richly imagined and utterly unique book about being human in the modern world.

These three sci-fi novels from the dawn of the twentieth century are among the first works of fiction to imagine visiting other planets. A Honeymoon in Space: Lenox, the Earl of Redgrave, has invented a flying ship with the power to break free of Earth’s gravity. But before taking to the stars, he has some personal business to attend to—namely, wooing an old flame. The lady in question is Zaidie, a woman about to be forced into a loveless marriage. Stealing her away, Lenox takes her out of this world. George Griffith’s accounts of other planets are spectacularly imaginative—from subterranean civilizations on the moon to the warlike Martians to the musical inhabitants of Venus. A Journey in Other Worlds: This philosophical sci-fi novel by John Jacob Astor follows a stockholder of the Terrestrial Axis Straightening Company across the solar system. On Jupiter, Astor creates a world of gushing volcanoes, crashing waterfalls, and otherworldly flora and fauna. In contrast, his Saturn is an introspective land. Astor’s vision of a future with levitating trains, a police force equipped with cameras, and an interconnected network of phones, solar power, wind power, and air travel is astonishingly prescient. A Princess of Mars: An Arizona prospector, John Carter suddenly finds himself transported to Mars in the first novel of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Barsoom series. The shift in gravity gives Carter superhuman powers—and he’ll need them! The red planet, called Barsoom by its inhabitants, is in the grips of civil war. To save the legendary Princess Dejah Thoris, Carter must defeat legions of giant, four-armed, green barbarians and travel thousands of miles across a landscape populated with monstrous flora and fauna.
