Written for both whitewater and sea kayakers, this book provides novie kayakers with foundation skills and step-by-step instructions for the standard rolls, such as the C-to-C, Sweep, and Pawlata Rolls. Experienced paddlers can take advantage of Ken's clear explanations of how to execute advanced rolling techniques, including the Back Deck Roll, the Hand Roll, the Dry Head Roll, as well as how to roll in current, waves, holes, and ocean surf. Ken also describes the most common problems that are encountered when learning the various types of rolls, and provides both their solutions as well as tricks for instructors to help students overcome them.

From an esteemed author known for battling gender norms and bringing down "man up" culture, comes this essential guide for men and those who love them. Miscarriage, infertility, and abortion are generally considered women’s issues—and while they are far from uncommon in our society, open conversations surrounding those topics are exceedingly rare. They're seen as taboo, even distasteful. And that’s just for women. When it comes to men and how they are impacted by these issues, it’s almost complete radio silence. It’s not that men don’t think about these things or aren’t affected—after all, they make up half of most couples experiencing these issues—it’s that toxic masculinity and gender stereotypes in our society tell men that suffering in silence equals strength and expressing emotions is weakness. It’s men not knowing how to feel, how to express those feelings, or if they’re even allowed to feel this trauma beyond supporting their partner. In Men and Miscarriage, husband and wife Aaron and MJ Gouveia ask men (and others) these questions directly. Using their own personal experiences enduring four miscarriages and a medically-necessary abortion combined with interviews of people from all different backgrounds and walks of life, the couple sheds light on how these topics influence men, women, their relationships, their mental health, and examines the shame and stigma too often associated with pregnancies that don't go as planned.

"There is nothing more alienating than having your pleasures disputed by someone with a theory," writes Lauren Berlant. Yet the ways in which we live sexuality and intimacy have been profoundly shaped by theories - especially psychoanalytic ones, which have helped to place sexuality and desire at the center of the modern story about what a person is and how her history should be read. At the same time, other modes of explanation have been offered by popular and mass culture. In these domains, sexual desire is not deemed the core story of life; it is mixed up with romance, a particular version of the story of love. In this small theoretical novella-cum-dictionary entry, Lauren Berlant engages love and desire in separate entries. In the first entry, Desire mainly describes the feeling one person has for something else: it is organized by psychoanalytic accounts of attachment, and tells briefly the history of their importance in critical theory and practice. The second entry, on Love, begins with an excursion into fantasy, moving away from the parent-child structure so central to psychoanalysis and looking instead at the centrality of context, environment, and history. The entry on Love describes some workings of romance across personal life and commodity culture, the place where subjects start to think about fantasy on behalf of their actual lives. Whether viewed psychoanalytically, institutionally, or ideologically, love is deemed always an outcome of fantasy. Without fantasy, there would be no love. Desire/Love takes us on a tour of all of the things that sentence might mean.

The inspiring true story of one writer’s wild adventure into the gems and perils of the Big Island of Hawaii, a blue feather as his only talisman. Wild sea turtles, black sand beaches, UFOs, and a volcano goddess living in a lake of lava? That’s only the beginning. Upon landing, Andrew feels instantly welcome. On his first night, a new friend asks him if he’d like to go on a volcano adventure with her. “Are you serious?” he says. “Yes, of course!” After picking up some gas masks the following day, they head to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, hiking down a secret road toward a massive red glow in the distance. By nightfall, Andrew and his new friends are standing on the edge of a huge lake of bubbling lava, radiating a warmth that feels like the sun on a cloudless day. Its beauty leaves him speechless, and they've brought food. His friends call it “extreme picnicking,” but his adventure has only just begun. Ten Thousand Hours in Paradise: Arrival is the first in a 3-volume action-memoir about the consciousness shift that happens when you embrace Hawaii. Volume 1: Arrival is a true page-turner, soaring with pure adventure, unrequited love, deadly lava, mysterious UFOs, ecotourism, and fascinating characters that you’ll never forget.
