Excerpt from A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine, Vol. 1 of 2 IN adding another to the many existing Treatises on the Practice of Medicine, the author may be reasonably expected to show upon What grounds he has ventured to advance a new claim to the public attention, already so fully occupied. He has no other excuse to cfi'er than this; that he has written in obedience to impulses which he could not well resist. Having been engaged, for nearly thirty years, in public and private practice, and, during that time, devoted an almost exclusive attention to the study of diseases and their reme dies, he has accumulated facts, and formed Opinions, which have been long soliciting expression, with an urgency to which he has at length yielded, though unfeignedly distrustful of their sufficient value. The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Excerpt from Domestic Medicine, or a Treatise on the Prevention and Cure of Diseases by Regimen and Simple Medicines: With an Appendix, Containing a Dispensatory for the Use of Private Practitioners, to Which Are Added, Observations on the Diet of the Common People, Recommending a Method of Living Less Expensive, and More Conducive to Health, Than the Present In the treatment of difeafes, I have been peen. Liarly' attentive to regimen. The generality of people lay too much firefs upon Medicine, and truli too little to their own endeavours. It is al ways in the power of the patient, or of thofe about him, to do as much towards his recovery as can be effected by the phyfician. By not attending to this, the defigns of medicine are often frufirated; and the patient, by purfuing a wrong plan of regi men, not only defeats the Doctor's endeavours, but renders them dangerous. I have often known patients killed by an error in regimen, when they were nhug very proper medicines. It will be faid, the phyfician always orders the regimen when he prefcribes a me dicine. I wilh it were fo, both for the honour of the Faculty and the fafety of their patients; but phyfi cians, as well as other people, are too little attentive to this matter. Though many reckon it doubtful whether phylic is more beneficial or_hurtful to mankind, yet all allow the necefiity and importance of a pro per regimen in difeafes. Indeed the very appc tites of the lick prote its propriety. No man in his fenfes e1 er imagined that aperfon in a fever, for example, could eat, drink, or conduct himfelf in the fame manner as one in perfect health. This part of medicine, therefore, is evidently founded in Nature, and 13 every way confident with reafon and common fenfe. Had men been more atten tive to it, and lefs folicitous in hunting after fecret remedies, Medicine had never become an object of ridicule. Excerpt from Select Cases, and Consultations, in Physick The Lovers of Mufic will excufe my enlargm g a little on the Power of Harmony over the animal Body, by mentioning a Fail: that comes from an undoubted Au thority. Henry Step/gem, the famous Prin ter, in his Apologie pour Herodofe, relates, that when he was at London, and went to fee the Lzom at the Tower, there was one, the greatef'c Lion, fo charmed by Mufic, that, whilfl he was devouring fome Food, a Violin by chance firiking up at the in Frant, on the Outfide of the Place, the Beaf't let fall his Food, and danced about the Den. As foon as the Mufic'ceafed, the Ammal'refumed his Feroc1ty, and fell with Fury on his Prey; immediately the: Violin renewed its Charm, the Senfe of Hunger was fufpended, and all the animal Powers were entranced by the Sound. That having mentioned this Faé't to others, who could not credit it, they went on Pur pofe, with a Mufician that played on fome other Infirument, and the Animal was in like Manner captivated by it.
