I Drive a Valence is a book of lyrics by Bill Callahan, the author and singer, whose songs (stories, really) are performed in his own inimitable and completely individual fashion. The book spans two decades of Smog/Bill Callahan songs. It is a fairly unforgettable look-see; in fact, it's a definitive-yet-concise trip through the mirror, collecting the lyrics to 70 songs and pairing them with 116 dreamy ink-wash images by the man himself.

An unnamed man studies the Vortex and his surroundings. He begins writing letters to a strange woman he is attracted to at a party. In this epistolary novelette set sometime in the future, he tells her of his daily life and a relationship between them unfolds. The letters form the seduction, in sifting the loose, disparate details of his day-to-day, the desires, the frustrations, the joys. The self as depicted through emotional weather updates, social observations, anecdotes, advice and well-timed punchlines.

The problem of moment formation in metallic systems lies at the interface of localized and itinerant magnetism. The phenomena observed correspond to destruction rather than to formation of spin-correlations. They give rise to the progression from local ized ground states through Kondo and mixed-valence behaviour to itinerant magnetic or non-magnetic systems. Somewhere in the pro gression superconductivity can occur in the presence of f-moments. To bring together the disparate ideas and methods, previously the subject of intense debate only at a number of topical confer ences, a two-week Advanced Study Institute was held August 21 - September 02, 1983, at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, Vancouver Island. In the stimulating environment provided by the pines and fiord at the site of this remote United World College on the Canadian West Coast, scientists and students from around the globe gathered to hear lectures by experts. The Study Institute involved seventy-six people and followed in the tradition . of pre vious "Banff" summer schools organized by the Canadian Association of Physicists. It was made possible by grants from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada and Atomic Energy of Canada. The grants permitted many young scientists from Nato and non-Nato countries to learn the fundamentals as well as the latest results in the field.

Mental health practitioners and students learning psychodynamic psychotherapy are often exposed to multiple schools of thought—Freudian theory, interpersonal theory, ego theory, object-relations theory, self-psychology, and affect theory. In this book, Scott Ahles introduces and explains the major theories and integrates them into a model of psychodynamics that can be used to treat common psychiatric complaints. After explaining the theories, Ahles, applies an integrated approach to two general areas of patient discomfort: problems with sense of self, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and feelings of worthlessness; and problems with interpersonal relationships, such as difficulty forming long-term relationships, excessive shyness or fear of others, and aggressive personality. The psychotherapy of both problems of sense of self and interpersonal relationships are discussed and illustrated with clinical cases. Ahles also discusses the psychodynamic model in relation to neurobiological research into brain function, and he explores how psychotherapy can best be combined with pharmacotherapy. Throughout, the primary concepts of object relations and ego psychology are demonstrated with diagrams and case studies. A valuable tool for teaching concepts to students of psychiatry, psychology, social work, and general medicine, Our Inner World allows the future clinician to keep various psychodynamic aspects of the patient in mind during treatment.
