Download Indianola Avenue Corridor Study Polk County, City of Des Moines from East Army Post Road to SE 14th Street Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Indianola Avenue follows a route that appears on plat maps as early as 1872. Today, the corridor is a commuter route in the Des Moines transportation network, particularly a route between downtown and the developing Easter Lake New Town area. The Des Moines City Council has commissioned a corridor study and Environmental Assessment to develop a functional plan to accommodate future traffic demand. The existing pavement consists of 1950's portland cement concrete and subsequent overlays completed as recently as 1989. Over the years, land use has changed from farm-to-market traffic to daily commuter traffic, and traffic volumes have increased from 5,500 vehicles per day (vpd) in 1996 to 6,400 vpd in 2000, and to 10,700 vpd in 2005.

Download City of Des Moines Street Systems Study Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The Iowa Department of Transportation (IaDOT) has undertaken a major, planning effort to identify long-term system needs for I-235 in Des Moines, Iowa. A consulting team headed by Jack E. Leisch & Associates (JEL) conducted a two-year study of the freeway from 1987 through early 1989. As the study progressed, it became apparent that improvements to the freeway could have many potential impacts on the Des Moines street system. Also, development plans for the Des Moines CBD continued to surface, raising questions regarding local street traffic problems and impacts. In the Spring of 1988, the city of Des Moines contracted with Jack E. Leisch & Associates to perform a parallel study of street system needs and impacts. This study, reported here, focused on problems and solutions associated with reconstruction of I-235, long-term growth in the CBD, and other major changes in the transportation network.
