Excerpt from Hunting in Many Countries IN the following pages the author has attempted a double task: he has gathered from the experience of many years recollections of runs with packs of hounds whose names are familiar to all, and he has complied with the wishes of friends in the North of England and elsewhere in giving particulars of certain packs which have hitherto been neglected by fox-hunting historians. He has not aimed in all these cases at giving the details which should be presented in every complete history of a hunt, but has relied rather on his own personal knowledge of countries with which he can claim to be fairly well acquainted. Some of the runs belong to recent days, others to hunting history. Three great runs, which may rightly be called historical, took place more than fifty years ago, and the author's descriptions Of them have since been confirmed and corroborated in the Field by others who had been present. In this write up I try to capture the feel of hunting in different countries, for game that is indigenous to these locales, experience new and different cultures, and to hunt unique and unfamiliar animals. I have hunted extensively throughout the countries of Africa, my favorite location, but have also been lucky to have had the opportunity to hunt in many other countries throughout Europe, the South Pacific, and North America. While I don't describe all of my hunts in this book, I have tried to highlight a mixture of my hunting adventures that took me to the most storied, remote, and exotic locations to hunt and capture memories.
