The Lost Art of the Sportsman is an exhaustive reference text and a compulsively addictive narrative from the turn of the 1900s. Francis H. Buzzacott would find little in common with the hiker and camper of contemporary times. This is the American frontiersman at his best—no-holds-barred approach to sporting. And while some of the advice and information in The Lost Art of the Sportsman has undoubtedly been replaced with the advent of new technology, what’s surprising is just how much of the book is still essential advice and knowledge for the modern hunter, fisher, and camper. Inside, you’ll learn: • What to bring on a fishing, hunting, or camping trip • Recipes for easy campfire meals • Hunting, fishing, and trapping tips for a variety of animals • How to deal with an emergency in a remote place • Clothing choices for a variety of situations • Tips and secrets for all varieties of firearms Faithfully reproduced exactly how it was originally printed, The Lost Art of the Sportsman comes complete with hundreds of original pieces of line drawings and artwork, a true collector’s edition for hunters, fisherman, and campers alike.

"Praised as "one of the seminal works in conservation history" by historian Hal Rothman, Reiger's book continues to be essential reading for all concerned with how earlier Americans regarded the land, demonstrating even to those who oppose hunting that they share with sportsmen and sportswomen an awareness and appreciation of our fragile environment."--Jacket.

Product Description: Nearly 34 million Americans ages 16 and older head outdoors to hunt and fish every year. Through hunting and fishing license fees and excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment, hunters and anglers are responsible for the majority of fish and wildlife conservation funding in the United States. Fish and wildlife management programs funded by these fees have conserved millions of acres of habitat and have brought back many species, including wild turkey, wood duck, bald eagle, and pronghorn antelope, from unhealthy population levels. Understanding hunting and fishing, and hunters and anglers as a constituency, is vital to effectively managing the nation's natural resources. Policy makers, legislators, fish and wildlife professionals, conservation organizations, and hunters and anglers themselves have an unmet need for science-based, comprehensive information on hunting and fishing to inform their understanding, communications, decision making, and planning. The Sportsman's Voice: Hunting and Fishing in America, is the first book that provides a comprehensive, up-to-date look at hunting and fishing in America. It bridges the gap between hundreds of scientific studies of the human dimensions of conservation and on-the-ground situations, giving this information meaningful context and real-world utility.

Excerpt from The Sportsman's Guide to the Northern Lakes: With Hints on Fishing, Hunting, and Trapping Fishing and Hunting in the Northern Summer Land, the poetry of motion, the music in the air, the thrill, the healthful exercise; what exquisite, unutterable joy! Where is the sportsman, or the pleasure tourist out for a week, who can resist the temptation to shoulder a gun and throw a line? One's mind grows fresher; memories bring back the scenes of early youth, - the brooklet, the meadow, the silvery lake and the alpine height. Yes! all of these, and myriads of game and tons of fish await your arrival in the Northern Wilderness. The great forests of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota, bedecked by an infinite number of glistening lakes and crystal streams, together form one of the grandest pleasure gardens of the world; and there is where our little book wishes to guide those who are susceptible. Then, if we should inform you only in regard to "Points of Interest," choice localities for game and fish and the ways of getting there, you might, if not a practical sportsman, fail of "bagging" a single fowl or deer, or of catching even a trout. But no! such is not to be. You will find your game and will "bag" it too, for we have given you explicit instructions and many useful hints for sporting operations. We do not claim perfection, or that any one subject cannot be more fully treated. We have simply done our best, and hope to be encouraged by those who could, if they would, help the good work along. We shall be glad to receive criticisms if any of our readers should happen to find us in error regarding any point or subject. Our fund of information has been gathered from so many sources that it is not at all improbable that some small errors occur. To attempt a description of all the desirable points located within the bounds of the three States previously mentioned, we find entirely impossible in a work of limited scope. Therefore we have arranged in alphabetical order, an "Index to Northern Sporting and Pleasure Resorts," which will add considerably no doubt to the usefulness of our little work.
