This is Barney Smiths second book. HUMOR IN LAW ENFORCEMENT [Factually Speaking] parallels his first book inasmuch as it humorously touches on people who had ties with, knowledge about, or experience with law enforcement. Additionally, this book deals with factual actions of former law enforcement officers, average citizens, not-so-average citizens, and the author. Also included are additional factual law enforcementrelated issues, and law enforcementrelated jokes involving cops and citizens. Some citizens may be able to recognize themselves in one of the stories or situations but, in all probability, will not admit it. Some of the officers may also recognize themselves (or be recognized), but they surely will not brag about it or bring it to anyones attention. We will just have to let that information remain undocumented. Sorry, but it is what it is.

These short stories are based on actual events. The stories were developed from experiences, interviews, and observations of the men and women of law enforcement. It must be noted that every story of humor, thousands of events occur daily in law enforcement that are serious. Many dangers and dilemmas exist in the every day lives of our police officers. This book was written to promote as well as inspire humor, which I think all of us as human beings posses. With all the seriousness, trials and tribulations life's journey brings, it is my belief that if we can find it within us to laugh at others and ourselves, our burdens can truly be lightened. In turn, our lives can be more tolerable, meaningful and enjoyable. We must not take ourselves too seriously, but we must not allow humor to be harmful to others. These stories are another side of police work that some may not be totally aware of. It is my hope they will give you a chuckle and offer a better understanding and appreciation of the human side of our dedicated police officers.

Protecting the southern border of America is about as stressful as it gets for a law enforcement officer. Sometimes, you have to laugh to maintain your sanity. When one stops to think about it for a second, it becomes clear that police officers must come across some of the craziest, most eccentric, and most unexpected aspects of everyday society as a fundamental part of their job, whether it be on the streets of New York City or the Mexican border. If only a police officer with a sense of humor decided to write some of the best stories down...? That's exactly what Robert L. Bryan does best. As a former NYC cop and Border Patrol Agent, Bryan's been in the thick of it for most of his career, treading the thin blue line between civility and chaos. Along the way, he's come across some seriously bizarre characters, and some even more bizarre situations. Sometimes, a man has just got to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, and with his talent for turning a phrase and spinning a good yarn, Dark Knights 2: The Dark Humor of Police Officers - Border Patrol Edition spins plenty of hilarious tales which range from the horrifyingly funny to the downright weird while Bryan worked his first law enforcement job on the southern border Dark Knights 2 manages to not just be a fantastic piece of light entertainment for those curious about the laughs within law enforcement, it also offers a truly fascinating insight into some of the more unexpected aspects of the job of policing America's border. In even the toughest of jobs, and in the harshest of environments, what else can we rely upon to get us through the day but our sense of humor? This is the fundamental premise behind Dark Knights 4 The Dark Humor of Police Officers: The Police Academy, a daring, illuminating, and deeply funny and sideways look at law enforcement in the USA, as well as at the eccentric and outrageous characters who work within and outside of the system. You might have thought that the distinctive, instantly recognizable, and world-weary dark humor possessed only by big city cops is the product of many, many years on the force. You might have thought that the jokes they tell, their sideways view of life, and their whole perspective on people, the system they work in, and where the world is heading comes about at some point between the peak of their career and the final stretch before retirement. You'd be wrong: it begins at police academy. Training to be a police officer, especially one preparing to patrol the mean streets of New York City, is one of the most physically and mentally exhausting processes anyone can go through. The shocks and surprises come thick and fast, and not everybody finds their way through to the other side or gets their badge at the end. As such, developing a sense of humor in line with your fellow officers - and a wit as quick as your instructors and superiors - isn't just a good idea to get ahead, it's essential for your survival on the job. From his work as a police academy instructor, patrol cop, and border patrol agent, Robert L. Bryan lifts the lid on the dark humor of the police force. By diving once again into the fray with yet another compendium, explores some of the oddest, funniest, and most memorable stories from his time working on the thin blue line.

In recent decades, some of the most celebrated and culturally influential American oratorical performances have come not from political leaders or religious visionaries, but from stand-up comics. Even though comedy and satire have been addressed by rhetorical scholarship in recent decades, little attention has been paid to stand-up. This collection is an attempt to further cultivate the growing conversation about stand-up comedy from the perspective of the rhetorical tradition. It brings together literatures from rhetorical, cultural, and humor studies to provide a unique exploration of stand-up comedy that both argues on behalf of the form’s capacity for social change and attempts to draw attention to a series of otherwise unrecognized rhetors who have made significant contributions to public culture through comedy.

In 1996, Garland published the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Police Science, edited by the late William G. Bailey. The work covered all the major sectors of policing in the US. Since then much research has been done on policing issues, and there have been significant changes in techniques and in the American police system. Technological advances have refined and generated methods of investigation. Political events, such as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, have created new policing needs while affecting public opinion about law enforcement. These developments appear in the third, expanded edition of the Encyclopedia of Police Science. 380 entries examine the theoretical and practical aspects of law enforcement, discussing past and present practices. The added coverage makes the Encyclopedia more comprehensive with a greater focus on today's policing issues. Also added are themes such as accountability, the culture of police, and the legal framework that affects police decision. New topics discuss recent issues, such as Internet and crime, international terrorism, airport safety, or racial profiling. Entries are contributed by scholars as well as experts working in police departments, crime labs, and various fields of policing.
