The Human Resource Business Process Outsourcing industry (HR-BPO) represented $21.7 billion in revenue in 2000 and over 8% of total HR spending that year, an even larger proportion among large firms, and growing rapidly. Proponents argue that outsourcing will re-energizing HR: in-house, strategic functions will be staffed by highly effective contributors, and outsourced, transactional HR processes will be managed by firms for whom they are truly the core business. Others doubt that the strategic aspects of HR can be separated so cleanly from the operating aspects and are therefore more skeptical of the outsourcing trend. This paper first synthesizes the theoretical literature on make-buy to identify the contractual, technical, and strategic factors involved. I then describe the structure of the HR-BPO industry. Against this backdrop, I discuss one of the more visible recent HR-BPO deals, the agreement between BP-Amoco and the Exult.

This book analyses managerial responses and people management strategies and processes adopted to deal with the challenges imposed by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). It examines how key actors in the system exercised strategic choices in a given strategic environment, as well as how they responded and developed strategies in this globally integrated industry, in an emerging market context. The book focuses on the nature of strategic choices available to firms in the Indian information technology (IT) and knowledge and business process outsourcing (K and BPO) industry. It looks at how these Indian firms in the IT industry exercise their strategic choices to deal with their routine business and how these routines were changed through learning and investment in certain HR and management practices in times of crisis. Additional insights from other national and industry contexts are also provided for wider coverage of how the GFC-affected organisations frame their responses to deal with it. The book examines the changes in the human resource processes and how organisations adjust their operant business models to deal with the pressures brought about by the crisis.

This book is not just one of the many introductions to Human Resource Management that are published, year after year, for use in HRM classes. Authors of those introductions face many challenges, such as the need to produce something that is both theoretically sound and practically valuable, or to find a way to integrate discussions on a variety of topics into one comprehensible teaching tool. The author of this book took up those challenges by, on the one hand, closely following the conventions that HRM scholars all over the world adhere to with regards to the demarcation of subfields within the HRM discipline.
