This widespread presence of TV in recent years has also been accompanied by a continued reduction in the gap between those segments of our population with the lowest and highest percentages of TV sets. The percentage of households with two or more sets has been increasing, and reached 24.9 (percent) in June 1967. These increases occurred in all geographic areas and in all sizes of household classifications.

However, the changes since May 1961--a small overall increase and a number of relatively small increases and decreases for geographical and other parts of the total--are too small to be statistically significant. As a group, they are consistent with a slow upward trend. In January 1962, 90 percent of all households had one or more television sets in comparison with 88 percent in May 1960. The percentage with one set was 77 at both dates; the increases occurred in the group with two or more sets--from 11 percent in May 1960 to 13 percent in January 1962.

The percentage of households in the United States with television sets continued to increase during 1959 and early 1960, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. This survey conducted in May 1960, indicates that 88 percent of all households had television sets, compared with 86 percent in May 1959, and 83 percent in January 1958. The increase of 2 percentage points since May 1959 is at substantially the same annual rate as the increase during the preceding 16 months, although below earlier rates of increase. Only 12 percent of all households had television sets when the first comprehensive information on the subject was obtained in the 1950 Census of Housing, and 67 percent when the first survey of this series was conducted in June 1955.

The survey, conducted in May 1959, indicated that 86 percent of all households had television sets compared with 83 percent in January 1958, and 80 percent in April 1957. Thus, rapid gains have been made since 1950 when the first comprehensive information on television obtained by the 1950 Census of Housing indicated that only 12 percent of all households had television sets.

The number of households with television sets in the United States was over six times as great in June 1955 as it was in April 1950, according to the results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of the Census. About 32 million, or 67 percent of the households enumerated in June, had one or more television sets, whereas in 1950, the first time that a question on television was included in a census, there were about 5,000,000 households with television sets, or 12 percent of the total. About 80 percent of the households located in standard metropolitan areas of the Nation had one or more sets. Only a little over a half of the households in urban places outside standard metropolitan areas and less than half of the households in rural territory outside standard metropolitan areas had television sets.
