Excerpt from Hours of Christian Devotion The thought of labouring in this field of literature, however, was foreign to my mind until awakened by outward incidents. First of all, in the year 1826, when bowed down both in mind and body by long and severe indisposition, I began to write medita tions on passages of Scripture chiefly with a view to my own consolation. The task was never finished. During my second visit to England, I received a fresh impulse by becoming ao quainted with a work of which the plan appeared to me emi nently suited for family worship. It contained select portions of sacred Scripture, chiefly of a practical tendency, and one for every day of the year. Short solutions of the difficulties were given for the purpose of promoting insight into the meaning of the Word. There was then appended a meditation upon the text, and finally a prayer embodying, as vows to God, the resolu tions inspired by the subject. I still think that a devotional work executed according to such a plan is a real want of the Church of our native land still requiring to be supplied and I was stirred up repeatedly to think of composing a work of the sort. It was, however, the state of my eyesight, which for a length of time threatened to fail me, that proved the occasion of my writing the book which I now present to the Christian world. During the winter mornings and evenings I was prevented from pursuing my usual employments by candle-light, and it was then that, in quiet rumination, the plan of these Hours of Christian Devotion was matured. At the time, the danger of being compelled to re sign for several years, if not for ever, my vocation as professor, was constantly present to my mind; and if a season of affliction is not in general the most unfavourable for the production of a religious work, I may be permitted to indulge good hopes of the success of the present one, as not only the original conception but also the subsequent execution of it occupied what were very grave hours of my life. Excerpt from Devotional Hours With the Bible There are two methods of studying the Bible. One is, verse by verse, giving close thought to every word, even looking into etymology and grammatical construction, so that the exact sense of the text may be learned. Such study is important. Many rich shades of meaning are often revealed by intelligent and scholarly exegesis. Commentaries that take us over the Bible in this microscopical way are valuable. We need every particle of light on the Scriptures we can get. Then another way of studying the Bible is in order to get from it practical lessons for our own daily common life. What does the passage teach us? What Divine instruction have we in it for ourselves? It is the latter purpose that is in mind in this book. It is not a commentary in the usual sense. It is not an exegetical study of the Scriptures that is proposed. No textual criticism is given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Hours of Devotion: For the Promotion of True Christianity and Family Worship It is not the words which these contemplations present to you, my Christian reader, but the way and manner in which you read them, in the different situations of your life, - and what you think and feel in consequence, -that can promote your salutary knowledge, and the happiness of your life. Excerpt from Devotional Hours With the Bible: Solomon to Malachi The book does not attempt to cover every chapter; to do this would make it altogether too long - it deals only with what appear to be lead ing and representative portions of the Bible. It is a book for use in the inner chamber, where life receives its impulses for conduct, for duty, for service, and for devotion. The Bible is a very ancient book, but it is also a book for to day. It brings us face to face with God, and its teachings are meant to guide us in all our ways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Alone With God: A Manual of Devotions The author confesses to a feeling he has had for several years, that there is a great lack, among the rank and file Of our membership, and not unire quently manifesting itself, also, in the ministry, of a devotional Spirit. If it were germane to my present purpose, it would not be difficult to assign some reasons why this Is so, but at present, I am concerned only with the fact itself. This lack is seen in the small number who attend our prayer meetings, the still smaller number who can be relied on to lead in prayer, the large number of homes in which there is no regular family wor ship, and in the unspiritual character Of many Of our church members. I institute no comparison between ourselves and others. There is reason to fear that the lack of which I am speaking, is far too general. This restless, rushing age, with its eager pursuit of wealth, honor and worldly pleas ure, cannot fail to make its baneful influence felt on the Spiritual life of the church. To contribute, in a very humble way, towards the neutralization Of these adverse influences, and to point out, and stimulate my readers to attain, a higher standard of personal piety, has been my chief aim in the preparation of this work.
