“A charming page-turner” (Laura Jane Williams, author of Our Stop) for fans of Close Enough to Touch and Me Before You about two patients who fall in love as they recover from traumatic injuries in the same hospital ward…all without seeing each other. Alice Gunnersley and Alfie Mack sleep just a few feet apart from one another. They talk for hours every day. And they’ve never seen each other face-to-face. After being in devastating accidents, the two now share the same ward as long-term residents of St. Francis’s Hospital. Although they don’t get off to the best start, the close quarters (and Alfie’s persistence to befriend everyone he meets) brings them closer together. Pretty soon no one can make Alice laugh as hard as Alfie does, and Alfie feels like he’s finally found a true confidante in Alice. Between their late night talks and inside jokes, something more than friendship begins to slowly blossom between them. But as their conditions improve and the end of their stay draws closer, Alfie and Alice are forced to decide whether it’s worth continuing a relationship with someone who’s seen all of the worst parts of you, but never seen your actual face. “Equally humorous and tender, this tale of triumph over adversity is a moving celebration of the bravery it takes to show oneself to another” (Publishers Weekly).

The name "Houghton" is well-known to Michiganians. It graces a city, a county, a lake, waterfalls, schools, and more. But what made Douglass Houghton such a "star?" As the fledgling state's first geologist, he found more than any explorer before him from salt springs to gypsum. His reports helped launch a "rush" to the Keweenaw Peninsula's Copper Country. He also found time to be elected mayor of Detroit and teach at the University of Michigan, all before the age of thirty-six. Here's his story.

The story of how a Canadian-born dentist and Houghton entrepreneur changed hockey by openly paying players to come to Michigan's Copper Country to play hockey. In the early days of hockey it was a game for amateurs, however there were rumors that some players were secretly paid. It was not until 1903 that Jack "Doc" Gibson and James R. Dee decided to recruit the best players from Canada and pay them to play for the Portage Lake (Houghton) hockey team. The team won the 1904 U.S. Championship and defeated a team from Montreal for what was billed as the World's Championship. Following this successful season, Gibson and Dee began promoting the idea of a professional hockey league and in December 1904 play began in the International Hockey League (IHL). The league had five teams - Calumet, Pittsburgh, Portage Lake, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, and although the league lasted only three seasons it was the start of professional hockey.

"This nonfiction book documents 1,000 years of exciting English and American history from the perspective of one family--the Houghtons. From the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 AD, when our earliest ancestors first fought for William the Conquerer, to the 21st Century in America, this has been an epic adventure." "I have included a new chapter at the end of the book captioned '21st Century DNA Testing.' It provides, for the first time in print, fascinating information on the origins and lives of stone Age ancestors of the Houghton Family that lived in Europe over 300,000 years ago!" --from back cover.
